The Washington State Department of Transportation this week announced that the speed limit on SR 4 through Cathlamet is now officially 35 miles per hour. The speed limit on either side of the zone will be 45 miles per hour, and then 55 mph beyond. These reduced speed limits went into effect on Monday. The reduced speed limit corresponds with pedestrian safety improvements that include lighted crosswalks at certain intersections. A contractor will finish applying crosswalk markings and make finishing touches to the project when sufficiently dry...
The Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners covered a lot of ground at their meeting last Thursday. The commissioners approved a free launch day for all on August 31 at the Elochoman Slough Marina for the Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby, as they have traditionally done every year when the event is held. A refund of $707.40 was approved for a customer who had paid annual moorage but had to sell his boat. Interim Port Manager Todd Souvenir said that he had requested three bids for a...
To The Eagle: Our Community Garden volunteers say “Thank You!” to all who supported our plant sales in May. In addition to the many folks who purchased plants, several gave us generous monetary donations. Margaret Sears and Mariane Brightbill donated plants for our effort. Diana Zimmerman and The Eagle gave us good press, and many local businesses displayed our flyer. A shout out to Scott Anderson and Sam Longtain for their generous assistance in building our compost and soil storage area. And, as always, thanks to the Town of Cathlamet for...
You might say it was the pie that got her in the door of Tsuga Gallery. Laurel Check was looking for a way to plug herself into the local art scene and meet people, but it's pretty safe to say she was also hoping to snag a slice of pie at the Cathlamet Woman's Club Pie Social. Sadly, she was too late for dessert, but it's all worked out. She's since joined the gallery and is making new friends and sharing her creativity with the community. "They said yeah, you're very different than anyone else...
MAYBE NICE?--As we have seen, our June weather is definitely Spring weather; as in “springing a leak from every cloud” kind of weather! They say we may be in for a few dry days this coming week, but with temperatures in the low to mid-60s, it’s definitely not going to be setting any heat records. However, summer officially begins on June 21, which is scheduled to be dry, so we’ll hope that’s the beginning of our “real” summer so that our farmers can get those crops to grow and get them harvested before they either drown or rot. Fingers cross...

Exciting Summer News: I learned at the Chamber of Commerce office last week that our two award winning robotics teams from both high schools, Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River, will be the Grand Marshals for the Bald Eagle Days Parade in Cathlamet this summer. Isn't that just the best idea ever? I was told the teams are thinking of floats, too. I am excited for this. Not so happy is the news that the Rosburg Store is now permanently closed. Can't say more yet. Photo of the Week: We are all so...

Two young entrepreneurs, Ethan Fitzgerald and Noah Heim, of Willapa Kayak Rentals LLC, have placed their first Kayak Kiosk at Elochoman Slough Marina in Cathlamet, with the goal of making it easier for people to enjoy local waterways. The pair have known each other since they were kids. Growing up in southwest Washington, they noticed there wasn't a whole lot of available recreation activity in the area while there was a lot of great places to go kayaking, Fitzgerald said. They also thought...
"This was always the dream," Robert Mora said of The Cottage Bread and Breakfast, which opened recently in Cathlamet on the corner of Una Street and SR 4. It's a perfect partnership for Robert and his wife, Amanda, who have 33 years of experience working in the food industry between them. Starting as a dishwasher at 16, Robert eventually received a bachelors degree in culinary management from The Art Institute of Los Angeles. He traveled and worked in as many different types of kitchens as he...

The organization is active on social media, has written several op-eds, and is working...
SOGGY--This past Saturday, when we hoped it would be nice and dry for the car show, we actually had over an inch and a quarter of rain by early evening; a real “sog-fest." This Sunday began wet and breezy but at least it stopped raining for awhile in the afternoon and we even got some sunshine. Unfortunately, the forecast for the week shows only one dry day, but I’m hoping that is wrong as I think we could all use a little more sunshine after such a soggy May. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 9-15 are Brenden McClain, Ter...

Dave Heiner, age 55, was born a fighter and Can Do'er from the start surprising the doctors all along the way starting with his very first, "Oh no you don't, here I come!" into this world. He grew up in Altoona and Naselle, Washington and couldn't get out of high school fast enough after being inspired while working construction between his junior and senior year with his Uncle Rick Stelzig and signed up to join the U.S. Navy Seabees before he graduated. He served honorably for five years and...

That number stands at 314 cumulative cases, with one considered active. The Washington Department of Health, which counts PCR and antigen tests is reporting a cumulative total of 547 cases in the county as well as 33 hospitalizations and seven deaths attributed to the virus. (Editor's note: This story has been corrected to say that the council will meet Tuesday, June 21, not Monday, June 20, which is now the Junteenth Holdiay.) The regularly scheduled meeting of the Cathlamet Town Council set for June 6 has been cancelled, Clerk/Treasurer Sarah Clark announced Thursday. The announcement said there was a lack of agenda items for the meeting. The council's next meeting is set for 6 p.m June 21, a Tuesday. The council normally meets on the third Monday of each month, but this year, it is the Junteenth Holiday. The...
The Washington State Department of Transportation is still working to schedule two projects that will affect traffic between Longview and Astoria. The contractor is waiting for the right weather to complete work to add pavement markers and finish crosswalk work along the stretch of SR 4 through Cathlamet. "Because this work requires dry, warm weather, they are anticipating that they can schedule the work within the next couple of weeks," Celeste Dimichina Communications & Media Relations specialist said Tuesday. At the end of the project the...
There are reports of covid-19 in the community, but no one has tested positive through official local channels in the last week, so the count at Wahkiakum Health and Human Services (WHHS) stands at 314, with one case considered active. WHHS only counts cases confirmed by PCR tests. This does not include any positive cases at Wahkiakum School District this year, because they have been using antigen tests. Meanwhile, the Washington Department of Health (DOH) is tracking PCR and antigen tests,...
