SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 7-13 are Jaiden Mahitka, Patty Dursteler, David Shrum, Mallory Bosch, Irene Martin, Jalynn Rainey, B...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Jul 7, 2022

Dear Neighbors: (written on Monday) We all love July 4 for any number of reasons. I like having a long weekend to work in my yard and watch the fireworks down valley at the Zimmerman farm. They always have great fireworks. I sat on a lawn chair in my front yard and watched a long time, but I realized the echoes were exciting all by themselves. Every boom went from one side of the valley to the other reverberating well. Kevin Pellervo had a great fireworks show, too, in their field in Naselle....

Two years later, he returned to the northwest contemplating college and speaking Spanish like a native Argentinean. Vasion was living in Cathlamet and working a retail job in Kelso when his father called and asked if he would like to join him in St. George, Utah. He could live with him and...

  • Live bands to perform during Bald Eagle Days

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 7, 2022

Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Monica Budd was offered more than a dozen ideas for a Bald Eagle Days theme this year, but when it came to a vote from the board, one stood out, getting an almost unanimous vote: Bald is Beautiful. “They thought it seemed like a fun, good theme,” Budd said. “Something different.” “It’s about embracing what you have,” she added. Or don’t have. Bald Eagle Days will begin with the 15th annual Armstrong Memorial Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest at Strong Park on...

  • James Sorensen named to Port 1 commission

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 30, 2022

Wahkiakum County Port 1 wasted little time filling an open commissioner position after Art Hedman decided to resign on June 9, citing a move out of his district. Cathlamet businessman James Sorensen was the only candidate to respond to the announcement recently posted by Port 1 in The Eagle. Sorensen attended Washington State University and is an agent for Farmers Insurance with an office on Main Street. After meeting Commissioners Scott Anderson and Brett Deaton on June 24, Sorensen was given...

  • Remembering Terry Bonny

    Jun 30, 2022

When Cathlamet resident Terry Bonny passed recently passed away, he left behind a grieving community. He was a family man, friend, teacher, coach, artist, and he was a golfer! His neighbors, Connie and Joe Long, Matt and Carlotta Alpdemir, and Tom and Susan Gentry, wanted a way to honor Terry. They came up with the idea of replacing the bench on the 9th hole at the Skyline Golf Course. Manager Shannon Moore was on board with the plan and delivered a weather-worn bench to Long's workshop. Long...

  • Three day weekend to celebrate July 4

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 30, 2022

HOT ONE--After complaining about all the dreary wet days, we’ve finally got some hot ones, and we’re complaining a bit about those too, as it’s just too hot! Well, at least for a lot of us, as when you’re in the upper 90s, that’s just a bit much for me. While I had a high of 99 here, the Tom Webbs had a reading of 102 at their house! I really feel bad for all the animals that have no shade available to them in order to escape from these high temps and blazing sun. It should go without saying that nobody should be leaving a child or a pet in th...

Commissioner Dennis Reid said he’d been approached by three commercial fishermen. • Why is FOX afraid to air the hearings?

    Jun 23, 2022

To The Eagle: It seems that America has come to a place where we as a nation either continue united or end up just another Banana Republic. The attempted coup on January 6, 2021 was certainly more than just a normal tourist day as proposed by some. The hearing presented to we the people on every TV station except FOX was shocking and frightening to the point that FOX wouldn't air it. Even went so far as to give Tucker Carlson an entire show without commercial break, unheard of in broadcast TV history. Was FOX afraid that during the commercial...

  • Let's all calm down a little

    Jun 23, 2022

To The Eagle: Once again, we have certain people wanting to blame an inanimate object, and not place the blame where it truly belongs. What’s more is that it seems to mostly be coming from the same people who support our current Commanding Blamer in Chief. “Guns have become a scourge on our society.” Really? In my humble opinion, I would simply argue that certain human beings have become the scourge of society, and maybe enforcing the current laws on the books, getting these people the help they need, and/or the punishment they deserve, is at...

The community...

  • PIGYS sale on Island Friday through Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 23, 2022

SUMMER IS COMING--While we begin this work week with some filtered sunshine through the morning cloudiness, we are being told by forecasters that a dry and warm stretch with lots of sunshine is coming our way this first week of summer, so that will be totally awesome! After another stretch of rain had come in last week, I’m thinking the 80 degree temperatures will be most welcomed. I’m more of a 70 degree kind of person myself, so when those high 80s show up, I’m not much of a fan, but for the hay harvesters and the gardeners, and beach lovers,...
