  • Visitors enjoyed their stay in Cathlamet

    Aug 5, 2021

To The Eagle: My wife and I most recently had an opportunity to come to the town of Cathlamet, Washington in Wahkiakum County to join in the celebration of marriage of two of the county’s promising local products. We jokingly referred to it as the “Wedding of the century,” but it was a union of Ms. Jordyn Wirkkala (soon to be physician) and Mr. Nate Rogers (soon to reach the rank of captain while sailing for the Chevron corporation) whose wedding we had come to enjoy. During my life I have been fortunate to have traveled to 48 of the United Sta...

  • Plethora of new media on internet

    Aug 5, 2021

To The Eagle: So now we see what the future holds for our republic; ever increasing violence and dependency for our people. This administration is ruining our very freedoms and the will to resist with lockdowns, collusion with Big Tech with censorship of free speech, the cheapening of our currency with its partner, ever-increasing inflation and reopening the floodgates to millions of undocumented immigrants will kill the United States of America. For all the soft-headed who believe that a little tyranny will help us get over our problems, I...

  • No objection to affordable housing

    Aug 5, 2021
    1

To The Eagle: About Bill Coon’s eight tiny homes project, I forgot to mention that he plans to build it all on the left side of the single lane gravel driveway right smack dab in front of the neighbor’s back yard. If you do drive out to see where he plans to build his project, ask yourself would you want this kind of development in your back yard? Again, we have no objection with low income/affordable housing but this is definitely not the place for it. Toni Below Cathlamet...

    Karen Bertroch|Aug 5, 2021

Good morning, readers! May the Saints of Rain bless us in the coming days. My yard is brown and my flowers are thirsty. Thanks to all the great gardeners in the area. As I drive around I appreciate the beautiful yards and gardens. Wolverines: Reports from several sources support the increased sightings of wolverines in the area. These small wild animals are usually up high in the Cascade range, but recently one was seen on the peninsula beach. Two of them have been seen in upper Salmon Creek...

  • Coming soon: The County Fair

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 29, 2021

Ka'vi Welker, 14, of Cathlamet, may have joined the Wahkiakum County Fair Court thanks to a bit of fast talking by some smooth characters in Skamokawa. "I didn't really understand what was going on," Ka'vi said. "People at the fairgrounds thought I should do this." "They didn't really explain," she said, dryer than dry. It hasn't been too bad. She got to enjoy some of the usual perks of being a fair princess. She was in a parade and recently attended the Cowlitz County Fair. Ka'vi is a...

  • More on tiny homes

    Jul 29, 2021

To The Eagle: Regarding last week’s article about “Planned development travels bumpy road,” Bill Coons bought two parcels of property to provide eight low-income tiny homes around our neighborhood. He was going to do this without letting the surrounding neighbors know what his intentions were. The neighbor who sold Coons the property had no idea he was going to do this until afterwards and wished he’d never sold it to him. Coons’ intentions may sound good but there is another side and more to this story. Coons’ comments “It’s amazing how nei...

    Jul 29, 2021

To The Eagle: Thank you for a great Bald Eagle Festival this year! It was wonderful to celebrate with you in Cathlamet, and to see so many families enjoy the parade, fireworks, music and businesses. Congratulations to the Grand Prize Trophy winner from Little Island who entered the parade as "Alpha's Little Nutes." Your "eagle nest" was truly amazing. Special thanks to the Chamber of Commerce, the Elochoman Slough Marina and the hundreds of volunteers who made Bald Eagle Days possible this year. The theme, "Fly Like An Eagle" could not have...

Public Works Director Chuck Beyer said the failed culvert was causing flooding of farmland. • Frozen berry sale will take place

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 29, 2021

STILL DRY--While Germany, Belgium and other countries are getting hammered by massive amounts of rain, and even our southern states are getting wet, most of us around our area are staying pretty doggone dry. Some areas got some slight mist, but for the most part, dry is the word for the month and it looks to stay that way until this month is over and even into the next one, so please continue to be vigilant when it comes to fire or anything that could accidently start one. I hope you're able to sufficiently keep yourselves and your animals...

  • The Bald Eagle is back

    Jul 22, 2021
    1

After a year with no festival because of pandemic concerns, The Cathlamet Bald Eagle Days festival was back last weekend, and a good time was had by all. By Diana Zimmerman Another Bald Eagle Days is in the books, and based on the number of people in attendance, it was a successful one. Up on Columbia Street, it was relatively quiet, but as the parade participants reached the bottom of the hill and Main Street, participants were met by a mass of people and vendors lining the route. "I thought...

  • Wahkiakum West supporting east side broadband effort

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 22, 2021
    1

Wahkiakum West is considering taking an active role in extending broadband on the east side of Wahkiakum County, their new CEO Ken Johnson told the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Directors on Tuesday. Following a meeting with PUD General Manager Dave Tramblie, Johnson said he approached the Wahkiakum West board about how they might help the broadband effort on the east side of the county. They gave him “latitude to explore this,” he said, though he would have to return to them for further app...

  • General Grant did not stay in my house

    Jul 22, 2021
    3

To The Eagle: Enough is enough. I am a 100% service-connected permanent and totally disabled Army Veteran (you're welcome). I moved to Cathlamet because I thought, way out here, people would leave me well enough alone, and mind their own business. Boy-Howe-D, did I get that wrong! Where to start? Although many of you are old as mud and will be soon pushing up daisies, that does not make you history buffs. General Grant did not stay in my house, before or during the Civil War. I know this, because my house was not built until after the Civil...

  • Observation noted

    Jul 22, 2021

To The Eagle: I have observed recently on an ever increasing basis that it has become the trend for stores to give their customers less for more. Have you noticed what you buy is smaller, there is less of it, the containers are smaller? And it all costs more! I do believe this trend is the work of the “Bean Counters.” I am guessing they think that they have a captive customer base. “People can’t do without what we sell so we can get away with giving less product for more money.” Also this trend may be an attempt to offset inflation. Oops, Uh...

  • University of Flat Earth Society popular

    Jul 22, 2021

To The Eagle: The irony of the week has to be the flapdoodle by the Honorable Governor of Texas stating, "It's outrageous that the Dems are obstructing voting on our bill." Of course the bill under consideration was designed to obstruct voting. He really did say that. Just wow. Not to be outdone, we have our own folks here that also seem to have attended the University of The Flat Earth Society. To wit: quoting a cabal of Qanon inspired doctors in regard to the efficacy of vaccines against Covid-19. Apparently the actual facts generated by...

  • County commission discusses center, other projects

    Rick Nelson|Jul 22, 2021

Editor: This story has been corrected. An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the town is responsible for utilities and maintenance; in fact the town is responsible for utilities and maintenance. In addition: The town owns the building and leases the building to Wahkiakum County for $1, and the town contributes $5K annually to help with staffing and maintenance.] --- Wahkiakum County commissioners have named member Lee Tischer their delegate to discuss staffing issues of the Community Center in Cathlamet with other local entities....
