  • Follies performers needed in May

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 25, 2013

SUN HAS ARRIVED-- After a wet, windy and often cold weekend with a spattering of sunshine here and there, it looks like we finally have a few days of warmth in our region and it's sure a welcome sight. I think my old bones were about to permanently seize up from being so cold all the time, so when the sun finally showed up, all I could do was soak up the light and heat- warmth at last! I did get to soak up the sun, but it wasn't by kicking back and enjoying it, as the flower beds beckoned and so it was warmth via sweating while I yanked and...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 25, 2013

Wahkiakum County's oldest food bank is looking for space. Started over 30 years ago by churches in the Skamokawa and Cathlamet areas, the Wahkiakum Food Bank operates Tuesday afternoons in a room at the county Health and Human Services (H&HS) campus on the Elochoman Valley Road. That room was created by walling off a bay in a garage, and food bank operators say it's inadequate for their needs. They asked the county board of commissioners to help them find other quarters on the campus. Commissioners Dan Cothren and Mike Backman said they would l...

  • Mayor decides not to run for re-election

    Apr 25, 2013

To The Eagle: I have decided not to seek a second term as Cathlamet’s mayor. Though I love the work and believe my time in office has been productive, family obligations require that I spend considerable time outside Wahkiakum County over the next few years. Our town needs a fully-devoted chief executive, and I am confident that our election process will produce one willing to meet the challenges. Contested elections are the lifeblood of our system. They introduce fresh ideas, bring new people into political life and give citizens a voice in go...

Submitted by Iris Coover The Cathlamet Woman’s Club was so excited about Earth Day that we had Richard Bigler, our county garbage collector, come talk with us about recycling. The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” Recycling is one small thing we can do to make our community a better place to live. Everyone enjoyed Richard’s informative talk about recycling plastics #1 and #2, using the bin windows that are already opened, not putting plastic bags in the bins, taking glass t...

  • Lone ferry bid double the estimate

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 18, 2013

Wahkiakum County officials were disappointed Tuesday when county commissioners opened the only bid they received to build a ferry to replace the aging "Wahkiakum." The only bidder, US Fabrication, bid $8.5 million, which was more than double the expected cost. The marine engineering firm which designed the new ferry, Elliott Bay Design Group, estimated the cost at $4,335,000. Public Works Director Pete Ringen will have a recommendation next Tuesday for the board of commissioners. "Clearly this isn't the outcome we hoped for," Ringen commented w...

Planning Commission member Jim Reed presented a report and recommendation from that board for updates to the town's sign ordinance. The recommendations in the document represent a lot of compromise, he said. "Not one person on this planning commission would have drafted this ordinance," Reed said. "We have different backgrounds . . . This became what we could all accept." The ordinance sets a limit on the size of signs, where they can be located, how much space they...

  • It's tea time this Saturday at SJFC

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 17, 2013

DAMP--It seems that whenever my flowers bloom and are looking pretty, we get a heavy rain or hail storm or some strong winds and my poor flowers take a beating. Sure enough, that's what happened last week. My camellias were looking real nice, as was my red rhododendron, but after being pounded by the hail and tossed around by the wind this weekend, they are looking pretty sad and droopy. Even the hummingbirds would rather get some nourishment from my feeders than to deal with those soggy, droopy plants. We're hoping to see a little more sun in...

Commissioner Backman consulted with me to discuss the outcome requirements of the ADO grant and explore if changes to the grant might assist the county in achieving its expected outcomes. I was pleased Wahkiakum Community Network was able to assist the county in this consulting service. Working with contractual a...

  • Busy week ahead in the county

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 11, 2013

BIG CHANGE--Last weekend was certainly a lot different from the previous one, as we were pretty much stuck in spring showers mode for a good deal of last week, with a tad bit of wind thrown in to boot. At least we didn't get the mini-tornado thing that hit parts of Pendleton and even Portland had some heavy wind damage too, so I guess having the rain wasn't so bad. With tulips in bloom, along with the daffodils, camellias and my one red rhododendren, it is looking like spring in spite of the weather, although those pounding rains did not make...
