The center became the local agency operating a domestic violence...

HALF NICE--What a difference a day makes! Last Saturday was really nice after a very foggy beginning and it landed itself as the perfect day to mow that ever growing lawn and enjoy a wonderful evening around a firepit after a tasty barbecue with friends. However by Sunday morning, the area was already saturated with heavy rains and it was a day to stay in and admire the lawn you'd mowed the day before and watch some football. Of course, if you'd spent Saturday washing your car, you were not too happy and you were keeping it off the road and in...

A moving contractor has been placing tractor crawlers this week to prepare for the move approximately a half a mile along Greenwood Road. "They estimate it will take about two hours to move the barn," said Puget Island farmer Fred Stanley. He and his wife, Crystal, bought the barn from Lee Nutter and are moving it to land they own on the far side of Greenwood Cemetery. "I couldn't stand to see the wrecking ball come," Fred Stanley said Monday....

  • A better community begins with acts of kindness

    Sep 30, 2010

To The Eagle: Many people find great joy in volunteering for the greater good of the community and find it very rewarding to lend a helping hand where one is needed. Just yesterday as I was checking my mail at the local post office an elderly woman was struggling as she was exiting with a large box in her hands. It was very refreshing to see that another patron politely asked if she needed help and then, proceeded to help her. I frequently see examples like this everyday in our wonderful community and would like to see more of this as I begin...

  • Candidates night at Skamokawa Grange

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

FALL IS HERE--The leaves are falling, the rains seem to visit us on more days than the sun and our days turn into nights before eight p.m. these days, so I'm thinking, Summer is definitely over and Fall is here! However, the weatherman said we may get a few warm days this week, so maybe we'll get our webbed feet dried out one more time before this year comes to an end. By the way, when we get these misty, foggy and darker days, it's best to get those head lights on early so that others can see you much more easily. Defensive driving is a real...

Tramblie reported that he had spoken with the mayor but clarified that he had no specific details to offer and needed clear directions from the co...

  • Council wrestles with budget crunch

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 23, 2010

Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz has ordered a selective spending freeze in response to an anticipated budget shortfall for 2010, and some department heads aren't happy. Wehrfritz said Monday it appears the town's general fund will be about $41,000 short of its expected revenue for 2010 because of declines in sales tax receipts and other taxes which are suffering in the national recession. The town's sewer and water departments, with revenues based on usage fees, however, are doing fine. In other business Monday, the council asked the planning...

WET ONE--As I begin this column this Tuesday morning, it is mighty wet here in West Valley. This took me by surprise after such a beautiful Monday evening which seemed to hold promise of another nice day. The brown yard out front is probably enjoying a drink about now and I won't feel compelled to wash my car or do any yardwork, a win, win for me! I hear we are supposed to experience some clearing later in the day, so for all you folks who need to finish up those outside chores, there's still some hope on the horizon. SPECIAL DAYS--Those...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Sep 16, 2010

As I walked around the fairgrounds this year I noticed there were people I didn’t know at our Fair. We also gave out many new exhibitor numbers. These two observations made me suspect that we had more people attending our Fair this year. Patty Dursteler, the Fair Board Treasurer, had the attendance count at the last Fair Board meeting. We had a huge increase in attendance! The search is on, we are looking for fun and interesting entertainment for our 2011 Fair. Fair Entertainment Committee Chairman Jerry Ledtke and I traveled to the Sandy, O...

  • Park grant comes in low

    Sep 16, 2010

Cathlamet officials learned this week that their grant application to the state Recreation and Conservation Office received a low ranking and likely won't be funded. The grant would have gone for work on the proposed Queen Sally Park project. "We ranked 49th on the funding list," said Mayor George Wehrfritz. "The lowest down that list the RCO has ever gone is 42. I had hoped to rank in the low 30s, which would have put us in the running. "Nevertheless, there are other grants out there, one which we've already identified. The low ranking is a...

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 16, 2010

After spending three hours discussing the latest draft of an update to the Cathlamet zoning ordinance, members of the town council and planning commission agreed Tuesday that a new start is needed. Meeting in a special meeting for a workshop, planners and councilors agreed that the latest version, known as Cathlamet Municipal Code Chapter 18A had too many problems to fix easily. Instead, planners suggested the council should reject 18A when it meets Monday. Planners said they could revive a previous draft that seems more in line with council...

  • Pirates stop Mule air attack 28-7

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Sep 9, 2010

The Adna Pirates took on the Wahkiakum Mules and their new passing offense last Friday and left Cathlamet with a 28-7 victory. The Mules, a traditionally run-oriented offensive team, ran the ball 12 times and passed for 38. They moved the ball at times on last year's Class 2B football champion but hurt themselves with penalties and turnovers. The Pirates took the opening kick and mounted a touchdown drive, with Bubba Lara scoring from one yard out. The Mule defense stopped the conversion attempt, leaving the score 6-0 at 7:39 of the first...
