Happy New Year, my friends! This is my third annual writing folder for Eagle articles. We've all been through a lot over the past two years and I hope and pray we're only going higher, happier and healthier. During the past quiet week, I spent time in one of my favorite history books, "Water Under the Bridge" by Ruth Busse Allingham. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Marie Fauver, one of the first people I visited with when I moved to Grays River in 2005. I first lived in Cathlamet after...

  • WSP Sergeant Brad Moon has a horrible, no good, very bad day

    Diana Zimmerman|Jan 5, 2023

According to Sheriff Mark Howie, when the arctic blast gave us freezing rain on December 23, it stranded one deputy at home, and a trooper at the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office. Thankfully, according to the sheriff's report, it was a pretty quiet night in Wahkiakum County. Sergeant Brad Moon of the Washington State Patrol, who started his shift that morning around 11:30 a.m., was not so lucky. He was handling one thing up north before the storm came in, while another trooper headed to SR 105...

  • County commission lobbies for increased funding for ferry

    Rick Nelson|Dec 22, 2022

Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday lobbied the chair of the state legislature's transportation committee for increased funding for county transportation services. The State of Washington covers 80 percent of ferry operation costs, but state statutes contain a cap on that funding. When costs exceed the level covered under the cap, the county has to shift money from road department projects to cover the overage, Public Works Director Chuck Beyer explained. Overages have run between $100,000 and $200,000, he said. Is it possible to raise th...

Christmas time can be intense. Just finding time to shop, decorate, pick up family members at the airport, make cookies, attend seasonal services or events, hosting family who've come to stay, seating family members at the table so there are no arguments, or adjusting to new grandchildren or marriage partners and other changes each year, can be tiring and emotional. And then we add in the deaths at Christmas. My Aunt Hattie died on November 27 this year, at age 97. She has been in contact with...

    Karen Bertroch|Dec 15, 2022

I spent Sunday afternoon at the home of the Garlock family including Trenton and Megan along with their children, their oldest child, daughter Auspyn, middle son Tregan, and youngest son, Atlas, and three dogs. They have lived up Salmon Creek on Alanen Road for six years. What a fun family and the children have exemplary manners. Megan homeschools the kids, and Trenton works alongside his father-in-law, Lee, with the family business, Burnard Construction. Lee Burnard started the business in...

  • Lady Mules win two lose one

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 8, 2022

By Diana Zimmerman The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team is back to their old tricks with two wins after a season starting loss to Ilwaco. Despite the 49-46 loss to Ilwaco Nov. 30, it was a good game, according to Coach Rob Garrett, marred by an "ice cold" third quarter, when the team only scored one point. "We gave up too many second chance opportunities to Ilwaco in the long run," Garrett said. "I was really proud of the girls for battling back. We made a lot of good decisions down the...

Here's a Christmas story from Kayrene Gilbertsen: "For many years Puget Island was known as Little Norway. Christmas was our biggest Norwegian celebration of the year. Each family brought the traditions of their area and for weeks the women baked beautiful cookies in the irons they had brought from home; krumkake, fattigmond, sandbakkels, rosettes, goro and many more. Of course, lefse was our favorite. The men made the rullapulse as it had to be tightly rolled, tied, cooked and pressed. It was...

    Dec 1, 2022

Submitted by Nick Nikkila With only 23 days left until Christmas Eve, the speed of life tends to accelerate this time of year. As a result, one has to pick and choose which Christmas season events to attend. One set of events that is a “must see” and should be high on everyone’s list is the Naselle Finnish-American Folk Festival Christmas Concert, the Tour of Homes and the Soup Supper occurring on December 4. The three events are a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas Season. The concert will take place in the Naselle Community Center locat...

  • Community garden upgrades will benefit local food banks

    Diana Zimmerman|Nov 24, 2022

Thanks to funding secured by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services and volunteers at the Wahkiakum Community Garden, as well as some other Good Samaritans, there will be more fresh produce available at local food banks for a longer period of time each year, as part of a combined effort to combat food insecurity in our community. "It's always a question with us, regarding what we supply to the food banks," Wahkiakum Community Garden Volunteer Chris Holmes said. "Two questions, are we supplying...

    Karen Bertroch|Nov 24, 2022

More than 12 people attended the November 15 school board meeting held in the school library to make hearing the meeting better for all present. Early in the meeting, as the agenda changes were discussed, board member Tyson Vogeler, commented that he, as a board member representing folks in the Grays River area, would prefer having the board meet in the Grays River Fire Hall three times a year as Policy #1400 currently states. Superintendent Lisa Nelson explained her preference for meeting at the Naselle school: “My personal desire is to c...
