Get ready to celebrate all things bald this weekend, because the annual Bald Eagle Days are here, and this year’s theme is “Bald is Beautiful.” Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Monica Budd was in good spirits on Tuesday. She has 80 vendors signed up for the big event, and 35 entries for the parade, which begins at noon on Saturday. “It’s going to be fun,” she said. “We’re going to have more floats than we’ve had before. I think people are enjoying the theme, and it sounds like we’ve...
Culverts, roads, boats and finances dominated the business at Tuesday’s meeting of the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners. During public comment citizens pointed out two long standing issues with roads and offered advice while urging action on the problems. First, residents of the 600 block of Elochoman Valley reported that ditch can’t handle drainage during heavy rainfall; it floods the road and is eroding property, including underneath a fence and power pole. They said they’ve been told action to remedy the situation has been delay...
Terry Bonny, who was a teacher, coach, and driving instructor at Wahkiakum High School, passed away in March. On Saturday he will be honored with the first Annual Terry Bonny Fun Run, a two mile/5K run/walk which begins at 8 a.m. at the high school track. Bonny was a gifted artist, a graceful and talented athlete, and a beloved teacher and coach. When he spoke, you listened, and you'd be glad you did, because what he had to say was likely either wise, or smart, or something that starts with...
The language about the amount that would be added to the sales tax by the proposal outline was incorrect. The new tax for radio communications would be .02 percent. The proposed tax would be .02 percent added to the current sales tax. County officials say the tax would raise 20 cents on every $100 collected, or two cents per $10. Also, in Downriver Dispatches, the starting time for the Bald Eagle Parade in Cathlamet was incorrect. The parade will start at 12 noon....
Wahkiakum County Prosecutor Dan Bigelow is running for a fifth term. Before he was elected to the position nearly 16 years ago, he was deputy prosecutor for two and a half years, and prior to that, he handled felony trials and felony defense for 13-14 years. He also worked as an appellate defense attorney. "It helps as a prosecutor to have been a defense attorney because you know what a defense attorney is looking for in a case," Bigelow said. "It also helps to be an appellate attorney when you...
It was life and career experience that led Holly (Graham) McKeen to pursue an education, and now, to seek office as the Wahkiakum County prosecuting attorney. Members of the Cathlamet Town Council addressed some thorny issues when they met Tuesday, including possible sewer system expansion in Rosedale and possible zoning changes for Main Street business properties. There were many questions, few answers, and Mayor David Olson said he would work with town staff to return with more information. The town has spearheaded an effort going back several years to expand the sewer system, especially up Boege Road and its connections, identified as Area A. In a June 20 feasibility report from Gray and Osborne,...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to join Northwest RiverPartners, received an update on Wahkiakum West’s expansion project, and discussed fleet issues in a conversation about long term planning. Ken Johnson of Wahkiakum West started the meeting with an update on their project to expand broadband to the east side of the county along SR 4. Dense rock west of Skamokawa, personnel issues, and “rusty” aerial design skills slowed the project, leaving them about two month...
"Look at this office!" said Sam Shogren, the new manager for Wahkiakum County Port 2. I asked Shogren about his goals as we surveyed Vista Park and the Columbia River from our picnic table. His biggest goal, he said, was to stay out of Assistant Manager Terina Davis' way. The comment was unexpected and elicited a laugh, but in truth, Shogren was giving his co-worker a huge compliment. "The port is lucky to have a very good staff," Shogren said. "I am amazed, in the week that I've been here, seei...

Gail Queener will be missed. She has not only made special coffee drinks for all who stop for a break, she has also been a listener and answered questions such as, "Where is the nearest...
(Editor's note: The language about the amount that would be added to the sales tax by the proposal outline below. Undersheriff Gary Howell on Thursday said the new tax for radio communications would be .02 percent, not as stated in the original version of this report.) Wahkiakum County voters this fall will likely face a request to boost sales tax to fund improvements to the radio system serving local governments and emergency responders including law enforcement, fire and ambulance crews, utility crews, school district and county and...
Ben Vasion started screenwriting without knowing how to do it. Now he's won an award for his work in film. The Wahkiakum High School alum graduated in 2013, and headed to South America for a church mission. Two years later, he returned to the northwest contemplating college and speaking Spanish like a native Argentinean. Vasion was living in Cathlamet and working a retail job in Kelso when his father called and asked if he would like to join him in St. George, Utah. He could live with him and...
Giant hogweed, Heracleum mantegazzianum, has been found in neighboring Cowlitz and Clark counties. Giant hogweed is a Class A listed noxious weed. Eradication of all Class A weeds is required by law. Giant hogweed looks very much like cow parsnip which is a common native plant. Giant hogweed grows much bigger with heights reaching 15 feet. The hollow stem is 2-4 inches thick and compound leaves can range from 2-5 feet across. Not only is it invasive, but its sap can result in severe and painful...
Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Monica Budd was offered more than a dozen ideas for a Bald Eagle Days theme this year, but when it came to a vote from the board, one stood out, getting an almost unanimous vote: Bald is Beautiful. “They thought it seemed like a fun, good theme,” Budd said. “Something different.” “It’s about embracing what you have,” she added. Or don’t have. Bald Eagle Days will begin with the 15th annual Armstrong Memorial Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest at Strong Park on...
