Post 5297 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other members of the community took some time to remember the men and women who lost their lives in service to their country on Monday for Memorial Day. "We owe them a debt that can never be repaid," Post Commander Bill Tawater said. "It is our responsibility to recognize their service, honor their devotion to duty, and mirror their devotion by doing whatever it takes to ensure their sacrifices and hopes will forever be remembered...

Updates have been coming in from Ron Wright, advisor to the Wahkiakum High School and 4H Mecha Mules robotics team, which is in Washington D.C. and Maryland this week for a little international robotics competition and a tour of the capitol. One thing is certain, it's hot. On Sunday, the team flew from Seattle to Washington D.C. after their initial flight was canceled. No harm done, except their seats were no longer together. They arrived at their hotel and headed to a nearby store to forage...

  • Corrections/Clarifications

    Jun 2, 2022

The joys of publishing: In our summer magazine published last week, we misspelled the name of Carlton Appelo (correct), whose influence and ingenuity are still seen throughout the county. We also got the date changed on the front pate of The Focus, but on inside pages, the year said 2021, not 2022. We looked at those things and didn't see them....

Megan Leitz has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2022 at Wahkiakum High School after maintaining a 4.0 GPA the last four years. Her parents, Steve and Stephanie Leitz, never placed any importance on appearance, she said. Instead, they taught her that her most important tool would always be her brain, and that it will carry her, wherever she goes. In June it will take her all the way to Annapolis. • WHS Salutatorian Josh Chadwick

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 2, 2022

While Josh Chadwick's GPA is the second highest in the senior class, there is only a tiny speck between the first and second GPA's. His downfall, he admits easily, was calculus. Josh has a very active mind that wants foremost to learn about things that interest him, like computers. When around six years old, he learned computer technology. Then he took lessons in coding and building games on-line. He has always loved computers, so for him to study computers and robotics in college is a perfect...

The organization, which has been raising money for scholarships to help local students since 2000, decided to hold an online auction last year after...

  • Corrections/Clarifications

    May 26, 2022

Because of an editing error in last week's edition, the last paragraph or Richard Erickson's letter to the editor was corrupted. It should have read: "I support our constitutional republic and the Electoral College, which I believe should be in our state so each of our county’s votes can have meaning instead of just three counties deciding what the rest of the state does; that is called democracy....
