    Rick Nelson|Jul 18, 2019

Will staff of Port District No. 2 take over maintenance and operation responsibilities for Wahkiakum County's Fairgrounds Park? At their monthly meeting Tuesday, commissioners and staff of Port 2 said they are willing to consider the possibility. "We could take care of it (the park adjacent to the fairgrounds in Skamokawa)," said Commissioner Lee Tischer. Tischer acknowledged that a similar proposal a few years ago was soundly rejected by supporters of the county fair, who feared they would lose the ability to use the fairgrounds for...

The grand marshals for the 2019 Bald Eagle Day parade are Puget Island residents Lee and Diane Tischer. The two were raised in Wahkiakum County, were high school sweethearts, and have spent years working and volunteering in the community. “We dated in high school, then we went our separate ways for a year or two, but then she bought a shotgun,” Lee said early in our conversation. “Are you sure you want to interview us?” Diane asked. When the two were first married, Diane worked at a seafood...

River Mile 38 owners Rex Czuba and Javier Sanchez moved forward with plans when they recently signed a lease with Port District No. 1 of Wahkiakum County for the new space. “We are working with the county and the state to get the shoreline permit and all that stuff going,” Czuba said on Sunday. “The goal is to build a space that gives us a lit...

Cape Horn resident Bob Gawith asked for an update on the beach nourishment project. “It would be nice to have it right away, that would be great,” Commissioner Dan Cothren said. “I think that’s what we are all pushing for, but I think they are just waiting to see how much volume of sand is there. It’s to the point right now I don’t care where it’s at, but we need to show that we’re going to get so...

  • Trooper's family comes to aid of German family

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 11, 2019

"May the road rise up to meet you" was the phrase that echoed in my mind after meeting the Fischer family from Oldenburg, Germany. The family of six was near Dismal Nitch, just a few miles short of the only state in the continental US that they hadn't visited, Oregon, when their truck and the trailer went off the road and rolled over into a ditch last Friday. I don't think that old Irish prayer is referring to that kind of road rising. Rather, it seems to me, it is about trusting that life will...

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 4, 2019

Kites filled the sky in Skamokawa this weekend, as enthusiasts returned to Vista Park to take advantage of the sun and wind and as they said repeatedly, a lovely location. This community of kite lovers hail from many places, and travel to many places to practice their craft. They not only love to play in the wind, but they delight in the art of the kite, appreciating the designs, colors, craftsmanship and sometimes the humor, of kite makers. And making new friends. Some of them are kite makers,...
