NICE BEGINNING--As this week begins, it's a sunny Sunday morning around here, but it also started out very nippy, as it was only 24 degrees when we got up, so, we are truly hoping the warmer weather scheduled for the rest of the week, comes true. Those who had already started planting their gardens, found themselves scrambling to cover up their seedlings so they wouldn't freeze as solid as my water buckets did! Here's to "fun in the sun" and a nice dry spell, which I'm sure we would all appreciate as we head into the second half of April. Just...

Tuesday at 8:15 in the morning: What a gorgeous, full blown, stunning and arguably the most beautiful spring morning yet this year. The almost breathtaking blue sky has no clouds. The air is clear from all the stars last night in a stupendously bright performance. It always strikes me as humbling that the stars are out for all of us or none of us. They don't care if we see them or not. They just are. They exist whether we pay attention or not. Stars out here at night have only a little...

A nice thing about a new season--it’s a new start with high hopes of a bigger and better garden. The community garden purpose is to provide spaces for those who wish to grow...

NICE SURPRISE--I was so happy to see that our Easter weekend weather was not the drippy one that we had all feared, but instead we enjoyed some very wonderful sunshine and warmer temperatures, so that was awesome! Nothing cheers a person up like having sunshine to bask in during a time when family is coming for dinner and the little ones look forward to outdoor Easter egg hunts, so, this was a great weekend indeed! We woke up Monday morning to temperatures below freezing once again, so that 27 degrees made outdoor morning chores a bit nippy. I...

Beautiful Easter Day: It is a beautiful morning. My coffee is fresh, my dog and the birds have been fed, and I hope all my readers are also enjoying the early hours of the day. Easter was a family day for sure out this way. I enjoy the children no matter the day. I have no grandchildren so I "borrow" kids from neighbors and friends. Valley pastures look like beautifully groomed lawns in the spring and with all the baby animals in the valleys, it's a joy to live here. Beautiful Growing...

The April WordFest program will feature poets of the lower Columbia region, including Cathlamet's Dayle Olson. Heading the event will be Astoria Poet Florence Sage. Her new poetry collection, "The Man Who Whistled, The Woman Who Wished," tells the story of her mother and father, children of Polish immigrants to Canada, during World War II. Her tender-hearted memoir shows the poetic nature of reminiscence and how rich the memory can be when allowed to explore the past. Joining Florence will be local poets Jan Bono from Long Beach, Charolette...
Braxton Johns has been active in sports at Wahkiakum High School, playing football, taking on track and golf, but his favorite activity is easily wrestling. "It's taught me a lot," Braxton said. "It taught me how to be humble, how to lose, and how to win. It's taught me how to focus, work hard, and not blame others for mistakes." The wrestling team works so hard, Braxton explained, that there are times when people want to quit, but teammates build each other up, and encourage each other to...
Mary Jane Neves is looking forward to attending Lower Columbia College in the fall, where she can continue to explore and find out just what it is that she likes. She isn't totally sure what that is just yet, and knows there is a lot more out there to discover. As for right now? "School is going good, sports are going good," Mary Jane said. When it comes to teachers, she can't pick a favorite, but admits when she was a freshman, it was Mr. Cox, who she says always insists that he doesn't like...
Ellie Hiatt ran cross country for the Wahkiakum Mules during her freshman and senior years. "I did pretty well," she said. She did, indeed. Ellie frequently placed in the top runners this year, finishing in 11th place in the District Championship. It was all preparation for the main event. Soccer. Ellie has been playing soccer since she was five. At 11 or 12, she made a bigger commitment to the sport, becoming a midfielder for an Oregon United Football Club team. She has been traveling to...
NOT SO NICE--As this week begins, it's a wet and blustery Palm Sunday, so it's a good day to hunker down inside after making sure all one's outside objects have been securely fastened down. However, forecasters are saying some dry days are ahead prior to what looks to be a wet Easter weekend, but let's hope they're wrong about that. It seems our Spring keeps springing surprising weather on us, but we all hope that comes to an end before long as I know folks are itching to get outside and dig in those flower beds and get those gardens going;...

So it's Monday again. They just keep coming, don't they? For many of us, they are days to make lists, get started on work for the week and think about the trash pick up on Tuesday. What if we saw Mondays as opportunities to meet new people or to plan a day of service to the community? To make a date with a friend for lunch. I lunched with Trudy Fredrickson last week. She used to write this column, remember? She was such an angel to me when I had my cancer treatments. Trudy had eye surgery last w...
