SUMMER IS COMING--While we begin this work week with some filtered sunshine through the morning cloudiness, we are being told by forecasters that a dry and warm stretch with lots of sunshine is coming our way this first week of summer, so that will be totally awesome! After another stretch of rain had come in last week, I’m thinking the 80 degree temperatures will be most welcomed. I’m more of a 70 degree kind of person myself, so when those high 80s show up, I’m not much of a fan, but for the hay harvesters and the gardeners, and beach lovers,...
Summer has arrived and hopefully, the gift of warmth and sun. I have always liked Father's Day because it means summer is arriving. These days I am grateful for my community of friends and people who smile when they see me. Thank you for being my family of friends and readers. One thing that brings me joy is through this column. Being able to share news of what's happening and doing what I can to help when I know there is a need, makes me feel I belong. Photo of the Week: The Finnish American...
MAYBE NICE?--As we have seen, our June weather is definitely Spring weather; as in “springing a leak from every cloud” kind of weather! They say we may be in for a few dry days this coming week, but with temperatures in the low to mid-60s, it’s definitely not going to be setting any heat records. However, summer officially begins on June 21, which is scheduled to be dry, so we’ll hope that’s the beginning of our “real” summer so that our farmers can get those crops to grow and get them harvested before they either drown or rot. Fingers cross...
Lower Columbia College (LCC) will hold its 86th annual commencement ceremony in-person on the LCC campus on June 17. The ceremony will be held in the Wollenberg Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Due to the ongoing pandemic, graduates and their guests will rotate through the auditorium in small groups. Each graduate will be allocated four guest tickets, and no additional guest seating will be available. Approximately 200 students are expected to participate in the ceremony, which will also be live-streamed through the LCC website. For the...
Exciting Summer News: I learned at the Chamber of Commerce office last week that our two award winning robotics teams from both high schools, Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River, will be the Grand Marshals for the Bald Eagle Days Parade in Cathlamet this summer. Isn't that just the best idea ever? I was told the teams are thinking of floats, too. I am excited for this. Not so happy is the news that the Rosburg Store is now permanently closed. Can't say more yet. Photo of the Week: We are all so...
Every year, more than 12 million pounds of litter ends up on Washington’s roadways and up to 40% - almost 5 million pounds - comes from unsecured cargo blowing out of trucks and cars. This debris isn’t just unsightly, it’s dangerous to motorists, people who walk, bike or roll, and roadside workers. Washington recognized National Secure Your Load Day on June 6, which commemorates people whose lives were impacted or taken by unsecured loads and encourages drivers to properly secure their loads every time they drive. The We Keep Washington Litte...

Poison hemlock has been sighted growing locally. A native of Europe, this plant is in the parsley family. It grows to 6 to 10 feet tall. Stems are stout and purple-spotted. Plant typically is extensively branched with shiny leaves, finely divided like parsley or carrot. White flowers are borne in many white shaped umbrella-shaped clusters. This plant occurs in pastures and along roadsides. Poison hemlock thrives in poorly drained soils and frequents ditch banks. All parts of the plant are...
SOGGY--This past Saturday, when we hoped it would be nice and dry for the car show, we actually had over an inch and a quarter of rain by early evening; a real “sog-fest." This Sunday began wet and breezy but at least it stopped raining for awhile in the afternoon and we even got some sunshine. Unfortunately, the forecast for the week shows only one dry day, but I’m hoping that is wrong as I think we could all use a little more sunshine after such a soggy May. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 9-15 are Brenden McClain, Ter...
All over our west county area, the high grass is winning. Some farmers have started their first cut of the summer, but then the rain keeps coming and messes with the whole process. But on the other hand, Hank Nelson's calves are growing so fast we can see it driving by on the highway. Tyson Vogeler has goslings "on steroids" following him around all day. He may think they love him, but I suspect he's more of a mother figure meaning he's where the food comes from and they know it. Joanie...

However, one writer stood out above the rest: Jennifer D. Munro, of Alban...

Submitted and edited by VFW Wahkiakum Post 5297 When we talk about the American flag ... our flag ... we are not just talking about a piece of red, white, and blue cloth. We are talking about our country. We are talking about you and me and our parents and our friends. We are talking about every American across this great nation we call home. When we talk about Old Glory, we are talking about our hopes and dreams, and each plan for the future. And we are talking about our form of government; a government that even despite its own faults and...
NOT GREAT--Those who were counting on a nice Memorial weekend in which they could spend three days in the sun, certainly were disappointed.
