  • Mud wrestling at fairgrounds Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|May 19, 2022

STILL CHILLY/DAMP--The first half of May has certainly been on the damper side of things, which has been fairly disappointing. We had such heavy rain squalls on Sunday, that it took out all reception from the satellite, and of course, really hammered my poor flowers. They say we are supposed to be drying up a bit, so maybe we’ll get a couple of nice days this Friday and Saturday; certainly would be nice! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 19-25 are Kris Parke, Tayler Stornetta, Mitch Moonen, Julie McKinley, Bryson Havens, Elle B...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|May 19, 2022

Photo of the Week: Jack and June Scharback of Sisson Creek on Oneida Road. Life is taking on momentum now that we're heading toward June. Everything in my yard is "Coming up Roses" from "Gypsy" the musical, except my roses. I think the tips have frozen one too many times. But to say I had a great day today gives few hints of today's happy adventure driving out to "the end of the road" called Oneida. I sat for two hours with Jack and June Scharbach whose house is reached by walking across a...

  • Wahkiakum Democratic Party endorses Brent Hennrich

    May 19, 2022

Submitted by the Wahkiakum Democratic Party Last Saturday morning the Wahkiakum County Democratic Party took the unusual step of endorsing a candidate before filing opened this week: Brent Hennrich for Congress to replace Jaime Herrera Beutler. The number one reason? He is easy to talk with. He is not imposing or glad-handing. He listens. He looks you in the eye and his words make sense. He comes to Wahkiakum to be with us. The number two reason? He is a sensible centrist; not radical left, not...

  • Flea market Saturday at fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|May 12, 2022

FAIRLY WET--As I begin this column, the sun is actually shining but there have definitely been some wet moments to the day, and from the looks of it, we’ve got more of that kind of weather headed our way. So, while we may see some dry days now and then, there just doesn’t look to be a string of nice dry days coming our way, which we’d hope to see by now. But as we all know, these Spring forecasts can change at the drop of a hat, so I’m hoping those days that are showing “50 percent chance of rain” wind up being 20 or 30 and that those rain...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|May 12, 2022

Carlton Appelo’s 100th birthday is today: When we talk about Carlton, there is no question he made his mark on Wahkiakum County in so many ways. His father was the founder of Wahkiakum West Telephone Company. Carlton took it over after his early years in World War II and his education at University of Washington and his master’s from the University of Sweden. When he came home, he took over the telephone company and built it up for many years. His nephew, Steve Appelo, is now Board President there. Carlton grew up in Deep River along with his...

  • Carlton Appelo

    May 12, 2022

By Bonnie LaDoe, Portland, Oregon Although I purchased all of Carlton's phone books with the historic supplements, I did not get to know him until the late 1990's while visiting with Glenrose Hedlund in Deep River. My mom, Irene Upton, who grew up in the Grays River area, knew the Appelo family and when visiting the area over the years, we had stopped at Deep River to visit with Carlton Sr. and at the Grays River store to visit with Agnes. My Smalley, Upton and Kessell roots go deep into the...

  • Remembering Carlton

    May 12, 2022

By Kayrene Gilbertsen Carlton Appelo had a passion for his community and its history: past, present and future. He loved telling stories, sharing ideas and working to make the county more user friendly. I first worked with Carlton as a Port 2 commissioner, a port district which he and several others worked to establish when a large portion of the county was outside the boundary of Port 1. He went on to become the longest serving port commissioner in Washington State. Knowing the entire history of the Port was a great asset for the board. Vista...
