The Friends of Skamokawa has announced the following events: Their “Shred Day” fundraiser will be located at the Bank of Pacific parking lot in Cathlamet on May 21 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. There is a limit of two banker boxes per car. Sue Zabel, owner of Jabber Shack in Cathlamet, has issued a challenge to area businesses to enter the first annual “Cup of Sunshine” food bank donation challenge to support local food banks. The winning business will receive a prize. Bring non-perishable food items to any participating business in Wahkiakum County from May 23 through June 3. In an effort to reinvigorate enthusiasm for 4-H, volunteer leaders held a Super Saturday event at the Skamokawa Fairgrounds this weekend. "We are trying to get kids back and actively engaged," Deb Gribskov, one of the 4-H Leaders who organized the event said on Tuesday. "We wanted kids to try things they aren't doing in their clubs, or to see something new." Fishery managers from Washington and Oregon recently announced an opportunity to catch and retain legal-size white sturgeon in the lower 40 miles of the Columbia River beginning May 11. Staff with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife agreed to open the sturgeon fishery on Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 11 through June 4, from Buoy 10 at the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to the Wauna powerlines, which cross Puget Island near Cathlamet. Early registration is nearly over for the annual Great White Tail Run on May 14 in Skamokawa. The registration deadline for a combination race/T-shirt ends May 2. Greetings from the fair office. Wow! April is almost over and now the busy season starts. We have a lot of things happening out here at the fairgrounds this summer. We will be starting on our grants so that means a new goat, sheep and swine barn, new pavement and the third aisle of the horse barn will have the concrete put in along with an ADA walkway around the outside stalls. Wow! What a weekend at the fairgrounds. Easter Bingo was a packed house and fun was had by all. Then on Saturday the Lions Club had their Easter Egg Hunt. After that the Fair Foundation had its carnival and Easter Egg Hunt. Fun was had by all that came out. The next big event at the fairgrounds will be the Mud Wrestling Extravaganza on May 21.
