For the second year in a row, Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars is holding an online auction to raise money for scholarships that will support local students. Kelso-Longview Elks Lodge #1482 has announced this year's Most Valuable Student Scholarship Winners. This year the lodge is awarding $14,000 in scholarships to the top three boys and top three girls. These students are forwarded to the Washington State Elks Association for competition at the state level. Submitted by Kari Kandoll, Secretary The Seal River Cemetery Association has scheduled their annual meeting for Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m., at the Grays River Fire Hall with the cemetery clean-up at 1 p.m., at the cemetery. Family members of those persons buried in the Seal River Cemetery or own a plot there are eligible to attend the meeting and vote. Bring a sack lunch and we will have coffee at the fire hall. The small business owned by siblings Kyler and Maddie Standley and their friend Trevor Kent, brought their six-prop drone named Wingnut to give a demo. Wingnut is a work drone with a 6' diameter. Carlton Appelo’s 100th birthday is today: When we talk about Carlton, there is no question he made his mark on Wahkiakum County in so many ways. His father was the founder of Wahkiakum West Telephone Company. Carlton took it over after his early years in World War II and his education at University of Washington and his master’s from the University of Sweden. I first worked with Carlton as a Port 2 commissioner, a port district which he and several others worked to establish when a large portion of the county was outside the boundary of Port 1. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is beginning its annual hunt for pests that threaten the state’s environment and agricultural industry. Trappers will set thousands of traps statewide to monitor for the introduction or spread of over 130 invasive pests and diseases, including spongy moth (formerly known as gypsy moth), Asian giant hornet, apple maggot and Japanese beetle. The Department is recommending maintaining the species' classification as Endangered in the state of Washington.
