Basic research in Washington State University’s animal sciences department has found that dozens of genes change in dairy cows when they start milking. The finding eventually may help dairy producers identify dairy cows that use feed most efficiently to make milk and stay healthy. The research also may benefit humans by identifying gene patterns in adipose tissue, or fat, that best support breast-feeding and compounds made by cows that enter the milk and improve human health. “The role of adipose tissue in reproduction has been a matter of stu...
The Wahkiakum Mule girls basketball team played tough at times but couldn't put wins together in Central League action this week. Tuesday, the Mules lost 58-37 to the highly ranked Toutle Lake Ducks. With both teams playing tight defense, the game swung back and forth in the first quarter, with the Ducks leading 15-11 at the end of the period. Rachel Fudge started off the second quarter by hitting a three pointer to bring the Mules within 15-14 but that was as close as they got. The pressure of the Ducks' press began to cause turnovers, and...
The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team clinched the Central League championship with a 72-56 win over the visiting Mossyrock Vikings last Friday. The Mules took control early on and hardly let up. The Mules led 18-6 after one quarter, but Mossyrock closed the gap to 30-23 at halftime as the Mule offense went cold. The Mules exploded for a 24-10 advantage in the third quarter to take full command. With the Vikings focusing their defense on wing Toby David, point guard Travis Bain found a clear road into the key to score or dish off. The...

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP)—As a sports columnist, Luke Esser tagged himself “Luke the Truth.” Today, his assignment is to be “Luke the Miracle Worker.” He’s the new state Republican Party chairman. The party got drubbed in the last election -- including Esser’s own surprising loss of his state Senate seat in traditionally Republican Bellevue -- and starts the 2008 campaign cycle in a deep, deep hole. Last weekend, GOP grass-roots leaders from the 39 counties dumped Chairwoman Diane Tebelius as the final victim of the election cycle and cast th...

The Employment Security Department collected a record $45 million in overpaid unemployment benefits in 2006, an increase of nine percent compared to 2005. Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee said that new funding provided by the 2006 legislature allowed the department to hire additional staff and employ new technology to improve its overpayment detection and collection efforts. “Unemployment benefits are meant to help people make ends meet if they lose their jobs through no fault of their own,” said Lee. “Not everyone who is unemp...
A Port of Portland pipeline dredge has been working near Puget Island and efforts to fill scour holes have been working well, the US Army Corps of Engineers said this week. The dredge Oregon moved into the area around the mouth of Welcome Slough on Puget Island last Friday to begin work on the Corps Channel Deepening Project. Through an agreement and permits obtained by Wahkiakum County, it has been disposing of spoils in the scour holes, which are created by eddies forming below Corps pile dikes. The scour holes have been identified as the...
Wahkiakum County should receive $630,000 in revenue from timber harvested from county trust timber land, representatives of the state Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday. The figure is higher than what the DNR had previously estimated but well below the $2 million the county would like to receive for its budget. The agency has no timber under contract after 2007, but two sales are scheduled that could generate funds, said Stella Unit Forester Collin Robinson. One sale set to go to bid in June would have timber estimated to be worth...
There is an appeals process for November flood survivors who received a denial letter after applying for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Under certain circumstances, a letter with the proper documentation could get that assistance. “The recovery process doesn’t necessarily end with a denial letter,” said Libby Turner, federal coordinating officer. “Sometimes a denial simply means that more information is needed before the analysis can be completed.” Applicants who are denied housing and other needs assis...
A group of Portland business men and local officials are trying to find a way to replace the Town of Cathlamet sewer plant through waterfront development. The current plant was built in the 1960s and doesn’t meet contemporary operating standards. Replacement with a similar plant is estimated to cost around $8 million, meaning $50 monthly bills for customers. But by using modern technology, expenses can be halved, and the plant and other improvements could possibly be financed through development along the waterfront, say representatives of I...

The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is responding to increased consumer demand for biodiesel and ethanol by adopting labeling and quality standards to allow buyers to make informed choices at the filling station. A WSDA fuel-quality monitoring program would help ensure that wholesalers and retailers are in fact marketing a product that meets those labeling standards. Under state law, by November 30, 2008, two percent of the fuel sold in Washington must be from renewable sources. Biofuels are generally sold as blends with conve...
