  • Reader's Fave

    Dan Turner|Sep 4, 2025

I recently interviewed Lisa Yeager at her home in Grays River for our 29th installment of Reader's Fave. Each week for Reader's Fave, I have a casual interview with someone - often a local - who shares their favorite book. As we began, Lisa made it clear that she didn't have a favorite book. "But I do have a favorite author," she said. Lisa then brought out a book and pointed to the author's name, Sandra Dallas. Sandra is an American bestselling author of both fiction and non-fiction books....

  • The Eagle Outdoors

    M.D. Johnson|Sep 4, 2025

There are times, believe it or not, when I ask myself just what constitutes "the outdoors." I am, after all, supposedly an outdoor writer. Not an outdoor "rider," a pursuit of which I've been accused on more than one occasion. I do, from time to time, ride through the outdoors. For the past 33 years, I've made my living, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, writing about the outdoors. To some, I was a 'hook and bullet' guy; a scribe of the consumptive order. A fisherman. A hunter. The hook and the...

  • Gardening with Chip

    Chip Bubl|Sep 4, 2025

Gardening projects you could do Protect your tomatoes from tomato late blight with copper fungicides (considered "organic"). Watch forecasts for a rainy weather pattern developing. Apply spray before it starts to rain. It won't save all varieties but will save many. Good air flow to dry off the plants helps. Be ready to treat for slugs. The summer heat has pushed them into hiding, but that can't last. You know that they will have reproduction on their minds, so be prepared. Keep watering...

  • Westside Stories

    Lisa Yeager|Sep 4, 2025

One of the things I enjoy most about writing my column each week is getting to know incredible people. This past week, I sat down with a few members of the Zimmerman family to learn about their journey to the farmer's market. Bekalyn, the mom, shared, "We read in The Eagle that there was going to be a farmers market the following Friday, and vendors were invited to participate. It was the perfect fit for us. It's low-key; you can move around as much or as little as you want. You can bring what...

    Martha Bellisle|Sep 4, 2025

Lawyers are demanding the release of a longtime Oregon resident arrested by Border Patrol while fighting a Washington state wildfire, saying Friday that the firefighter was already on track for legal status after helping federal investigators solve a crime against his family. His arrest was illegal, the lawyers said, and violated Department of Homeland Security polices that say immigration enforcement must not be conducted at locations where emergency responses are happening. He is one of two firefighters arrested this week while working the...
