To The Eagle: Thursday evening, September 26, we drew the winning ticket for the Pioneer Center Association quilt raffle. I am happy to announce Pearl Blackburn won the beautiful quilt donated by the River City Strippers to aid the PCA in fundraising, and would like to thank the many people who donated by buying a ticket (or several) and helped us in our efforts to afford the many repairs needed at the center. There are many others who assisted along the way, and thank you as well to the merchants who put our flyer in their windows, Julius...
To The Eagle: Two weeks ago I read in the sheriff’s report, not once but twice, complaints were filed against law-abiding citizens because do-gooder(s) thought some animals were too skinny. One was old and both were found well-cared for. I see the Angel Wings fiasco being kicked around some more and this is twice in the last year our injustice system has railroaded people in jail for practically nothing; Angel Wings for a few animals too many, another for having them get loose. I have seen way too many people get raided, to the point they d...
Wahkiakum County land owners can expect to see their property tax assessments increase, Assessor Bill Coons announced this week. Coons said the assessed value of the county increased 11.8 percent this year, by $57.4 million. Part of that was new construction valued at $9 million. The real estate market also contributed to the increase. Coons said that the real estate Multi Listing Service has reported data showing property prices increased 10.9 percent in the past year. In a letter to taxpayers, Coons said he was shocked by prices now paid in...

Ghosts of Grays River: The Jesse Baker Jr. Saga, Part II Grays River has been home to some of the most illustrious people who for the most part have become unknown to but a few. This all changed for me, a relative newcomer who by nature is curious. Finding the Walker home's partial history led to the discovery of the abandoned Walker Cemetery and the lost graves of the Baker family who became the ghosts of Grays River. It is almost impossible to understand what goes through the mind of a man...
Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: September 23 – 9:52 a.m. A Rosedale resident reported that she was being stalked and harassed by the manager of the property. 10:34 a.m. An alarm was activated at a Rosedale address. 11:29 a.m. A Deep River resident reported that a kayak and a tool belt had been taken without permission from his boathouse. He was reluctant to press charges at that time, and said he would wait to see if the subject returned t...

The Maritime Fire & Safety Association (MFSA) will conduct an equipment deployment drill of its oil spill response resources on Thursday, October 3 on the Columbia River near Cathlamet. This drill is a critical component of the MFSA Vessel Response Plan. The MFSA maintains a state approved oil spill contingency plan for commercial ships that call on ports along the Lower Columbia River from the mouth near Astoria to the I-205 bridge and on the Willamette from its confluence with the Columbia to the Willamette Falls. The Plan supports the...

The retirement parties are behind her, and the final paycheck has arrived, but for someone like Cindy Faubion, who worked as a nurse for nearly 50 years, the heart and desire to be of service never really ends. Faubion got into nursing during the Vietnam War. "At the time, only men were drafted," she said. "I felt strongly that women should be involved in the war effort. Even though I wasn't a fan of the war, I felt like it was something I could do." This inner call to serve others turned out...
To The Eagle: A quick glance at the front page and on to the letters to the editor. I really enjoy seeing what issues have inspired people to take time to write. Some letters I agree with, some I laugh at, some I can’t make it through. And then there’s the one that motivates me to pick up the pen. Case in point: “Every candidate” Sept. 19, is so incredibly arrogant and condescending that I was shocked The Eagle didn’t do some editing. You would think the paper would want to encourage readers to write not belittle their skills. But that’s a topi...
To The Eagle: We are indeed lucky to have this unique and effective man, Donald Trump, to lead our nation at this time. It is plain to see for anyone who will take the time and effort. Did you catch the Howdy Modi event this weekend in Houston, Texas? President Trump was the special guest of the popular prime minister of India, Narendra Modi. He is the leader of the largest democracy in the world. He praised our president to a capacity crowd of over 50,000 as an effective, friendly, and fair-minded leader who is bringing trade, economic...

ENDING/BEGINNING--Here we are towards the end of yet another month, and yes, it flew by! As I write this, Fall has officially arrived and it's a cloudy, gloomy day, but at least it isn't pouring down rain like it was yesterday, so I'll take the dry and gloomy over the super wet and gloomy any day! With these cooler temperatures, it's definitely time to drag out those warmer coats and maybe add another blanket to our beds, as the night air has a definite chill to it now. The forecast shows a few dry days ahead, so let's hope that comes true and...

Ghosts of Grays River: The Jesse Baker Jr. Saga Part I Near the corner of State Route 4 West and North Hull Creek Road sits the oldest home in Grays River built around 1870 by Samuel Walker. The grass is close to four feet high in places, hiding this 150 year old home. It would be wonderful to see this home restored and put to use as a historical landmark. I find it comical and yet a bit sad that there is a heritage sign in front of the house that refers to the Meserve Park but says nothing...
Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: September 17 – 10:09 a.m. A brush fire was reported along SR 4 just east of Flandersville. The PUD was notified. Deputies, state patrol, and the Cathlamet Fire Department responded. 2:51 p.m. The county road department was notified when a caller reported that a tree had fallen and was blocking Altoona Pillar Rock Road. 3:25 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance and a deputy aided a Skamokawa resident who had fallen. 6:...

She is available to assist with renewals and to fix errors on applications that have already been submitted. If you need to start an application, the community center has computers available for use. The computers can be...

Member of the Cathlamet Town Council and the public got a look Monday evening at an updated proposal for development of the controversial vacant lot at the corner of Main and Butler streets. In other business, council members approved of a nascent collaboration between the Chinook Nation and the council, county commission, Port District 1 and the Wahkiakum School District. Council members also approved a proposed change to the town planning commission; they established dates for meetings and...
How will the vacancy on the Cathlamet Town Council be filled? Council Member Sue Cameron resigned from the position in August, leaving one of the five seats vacant. When the council met Monday for its monthly meeting, Council Member Ryan Smith was excused for illness, leaving only three members present, Jean Burnham, Laurel Waller and David Olson. When the public comment period arrived at the end of the meeting, Main Street resident Paige Lake asked how the position would be filled. She added that she had heard before the August meeting that...
To The Eagle: I was shocked and saddened when I heard that Skamokawa Market had been robbed. I remember meeting Logan when he first came to our county. He had a dream to restore the Duck Inn, Skamokawa Store and Hotel. His dream has enriched our community by providing an enjoyable place to bring family, celebrate milestones in life or watch football while enjoying a good meal. Logan’s dream was a labor of love (and money) to make them what they are today. These three facilities provide local employment for over 14 people. This is a call to a...
To The Eagle: I have written in this column several times about the danger, albeit the epidemic, that America is under going due to mass killings and other atrocities that involve guns. Yet we have one death from vaping, and our president is now suggesting that it's a big problem and that outlawing flavored vaping is the solution. Why wouldn't we start the important job of managing our gun laws, even before working to eliminate something that only recently claimed its first victims. America's priorities seem upside down. Eric Skemp...
Town council recall conclusions To The Eagle: Recently the Concerned Citizens of Cathlamet (CCC) petitioned to have Dale Jacobson, Ryan Smith, Jean Burnham and Sue Cameron recalled from their Town of Cathlamet positions. CCC is comprised of a dozen or so local residents that are mostly prominent community members. We had seen enough of these four people’s actions (and lack of) that we felt changes were needed. This recall has been a widely talked about issue and I won’t bother rehashing the circumstances behind the almost two year effort. The S...
To The Eagle: A recent letter to The Eagle promoting Trump is an example of the current divide between Republicans and Democrats. For decades the Republicans were the party with the highest educational attainment, but that trend has reversed and the writer of that letter demonstrates the typical functionally illiterate Trump supporter. In 3rd Grade most of us learn that a sentence includes a single thought. There is usually a subject and a noun. The writer, without articulating any real policies, rants continuously and only randomly inserts a...
