  • Election 2018: More reports from Grange Forum

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 25, 2018

In continuing coverage of some local elections, here are some of the things that candidates said at the Candidate Forum in Grays River on October 9. For county prosecutor— Dan Bigelow, incumbent:“I’ve got my three minute speech down to four minutes. I have been the prosecuting attorney for the last 12 years. To do the job of prosecuting attorney in Wahkiakum County you have to be able to do three things. Number one, Criminal prosecution. I’ve been prosecuting and defending felony and misdeme...

  • Your vote is your future

    Oct 25, 2018

To The Eagle: During this campaign season there have been quite a bit of unrealistic comments made by the opposing party. Here are a few facts that I do know. My dad, Mark Howie, has continued to work diligently without bias in the sheriff’s office. He has not allowed this campaign season to interrupt his position as your current sheriff. He has been firm and steadfast. He has also campaigned when it was appropriate to do so. I recently moved my entire life and family to this beautiful county of Wahkiakum for many reasons. One big reason is t...

  • Town council, updates CAO, sees moratorium end

    Rick Nelson|Oct 18, 2018

Members of the Cathlamet town council lifted a building moratorium, took steps to update the Critical Area Ordinace and handled other business when they met Monday. Clerk/Treasurer Kerrie McNally explained the reason for the update--state agencies are demanding current, updated Critical Area Ordinances (CAO) as part of the requirements for funding grant awards. Twice this year the town has lost grant funding awards for street and water main projects because the town's CAO is out of date. To satisfy the state departments of Ecology and...

  • Something in our local elections doesn't make sense

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: We have two candidates for sheriff. Both have law enforcement experience. That makes sense. We have two candidates for prosecutor. Both are attorneys. That makes sense. But we have two candidates for county assessor. One has years of experience in real estate and property valuation. That’s Bill Coons. And the other candidate has no experience at all in real estate and property valuation. That’s Brian McClain. He works on the ferry. He was employed at the Skamokawa post office for a very short time and left. Because HR records are...

  • Appraiser endorses Coons for assessor

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: My name is Michael Dahle. I am the Chief Appraiser for Wahkiakum County. In 20 plus years in this profession I’ve never written a letter related to an election, however, this year I feel that I am forced to do so. Following are my informed opinions. Due to space constraints I have left out a lot of details and have tried just to highlight the main points. First a few negatives (unfortunately) and then some of positives. 1. The assessor’s office is always a lightning rod for criticism. This often originates out of a misun...

  • Howie and Bigelow did wonderful job

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: Last week's front page story about Lee Wages getting the sentence he received was a testimonial to the wonderful job that both Sheriff Howie and prosecutor Dan Bigelow are doing in their respective positions. After the situation when Mr. Wages was actually shooting at police and was arrested without anybody getting hurt brings home how well trained our deputies are. Thanks, Mark Howie. As a retired RN that spent over thirty years of hospital nursing, much of it on psych units, I approached Dan Bigelow shortly after the arrest and...

  • Halloween events are coming right up

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 18, 2018

FIRST FREEZE--We must be pretty special here in West Valley, as this past Sunday, Oct. 14, we woke up to temperatures below freezing and everything was very frosty, and very cold! The sunny skies were certainly welcoming though and with temperatures up in the 70s, we went from heavy coats to t-shirts in just a few hours. Monday was much the same, and while I'm not too fond of the freezing part, the clear skies and warmth later on are certainly enjoyable. Forecasters are saying we'll have this dry pattern all week long, so I hope you're out and...

  • Sheriff's Report, October 18, 2018

    Oct 18, 2018

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: October 8 — 9:42 a.m. The Cathlamet Fire Department and the Grays River Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at a Deep River address. All units were told to stand down when it turned out to be a false alarm. 10:37 a.m. A credit card was missing and had been used after a burglary at a Rosburg church. 12:26 p.m. A disabled Rosedale resident asked for assistance after a neighbor parked on the sidewalk, b...

  • Howie is a strong leader

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: I encourage you to vote and to retain Mark Howie as the Wahkiakum County Sheriff. I worked at the courthouse when Mark was hired as undersheriff and I witnessed Mark take on the unexpected duties as sheriff after the death of Sheriff Jon Dearmore. Mark lead the sheriff’s department through rough times and proved himself as a strong leader. That’s not the only reason I am encouraging you to vote for Sheriff Mark Howie. Mark and Debb have a vested interest in our county and it shows every time they volunteer their personal time for...

  • Tsuga to feature art from 4 generations

    Oct 18, 2018

Local jewelry designer Joan Wren and her family members will be featured October 27-November 18 in a Tsuga Gallery show in Cathlamet. According to information from family member Debbie Thoma, the matriarch of the family and key to the family's artistic heritage was Helma Rohloff, an energetic, effervescent woman who grew up on a farm in Iowa. She milked cows, owned a beauty shop and operated a restaurant in Arizona before retiring and taking up oil painting. She took lessons from a local...

  • Assessor's answers just pass the buck

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: Bill Coons, in playing the “pass the buck card” in his reply to my letter, speaks untold volumes about his desperation. That’s right, he did say he wasn’t old enough for social security. Let’s just cut to the chase. 1. His wife owns the property 2. He lives on the property 3. He is the experienced county assessor 4. The “mokki” in question was constructed while he resided on the property on Welcome Slough. Now, one of the following occurred: 1. He knew about the construction and with all his experience chose not to inform the pers...

  • Vote for Carolyn Long

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: What has happened to access for health care? As a surgeon privileged to take care of many wonderful people from Cathlamet and our beautiful Southwest Washington region during the past 40 years, it is sad to see now how hard it is for people to get healthcare. There is always blame for local hospital administration, but this is a national problem. Bizarre decisions are made primarily because those running health care locally must try to figure out what “system” is being developed in Washington DC. I have been suspicious of politici...

  • Are licensing fees out of control?

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: I wrote a letter to each of our legislators in our state of Washington, including President Trump even though our president has nothing to do with this. I just received my renewal for licensing: $30 License fee funds road construction and maintenance projects. $25 Vehicle weight fee funds highway improvements, transit and other transportation needs. $3 Filing fee funds go directly to the county in which the fee is paid. $5 Service fee retained by subagent or funds ferry replacement if renewed at county auditor/DOL. $.25 License...

  • A voice for Matt Kuhl

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: Matt Kuhl is the right choice to serve as the next Wahkiakum County Auditor. I have had the privilege of getting to know Matt through his membership in the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Cathlamet. For a man so young, Matt has already chosen to dedicate much of his life to public service. He joined the United States Army at 20 years of age and served two tours of combat duty in Iraq before he was 25. As Matt told me, he believed it was his duty to volunteer to serve in Iraq because if he didn’t, somebody else would have t...

  • Couple supports Howie

    Oct 18, 2018

To The Eagle: My wife and I are relatively new to Cathlamet having moved here about five years ago but we certainly like this little town. During the past year, we have gotten to know Mark Howie and are very impressed with the way he conducts himself. There have been a large number of endorsements for Sheriff Howie in The Eagle which has also impressed us. We believe that Mark has a good feel for what is needed in this county and what we can afford. We are going to vote for the man wearing the big cowboy hat. Dan and Nona Preble...

  • Candidates for sheriff, assessor face off at forum

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 11, 2018

The Grays River Grange hosted a candidate forum moderated by Grangemaster Krist Novoselic. Candidates from state races to local races were invited to speak and answer questions. The Eagle will focus on two local races: Assessor and Sheriff. Candidates for sheriff introduced themselves and then answered questions from the audience. Here are some of their thoughts. Graham Phalen: "I'm a Republican candidate for sheriff. I've lived here for about three years. We moved here so we could combine our...

  • Body found in river was that of Island resident

    Rick Nelson|Oct 11, 2018

The body of a man found in the Columbia River last month has been identified as Puget Island resident Joe Abeyta. Clatsop County Medical Examiner Dr. JoAnn Giuliani said late Friday afternoon that fingerprints confirmed the identity. Abeyta lived alone in a waterfront residence on the northern side of Little Island. He was often seen walking with his dog across Puget Island bridge into Cathlamet to collect his mail. At the request of Dr. Giuliani, newspapers published a detailed description of his clothing, and Wahkiakum County Prosecuting...
