With the increase in the incidence of coronavirus illnesses in Washington, Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services officials have begun defining steps to deal with the new illness. Now named COVID-19, the virus originated in Wuhan, China, as an illness that transferred from wildlife to humans. It is a virus new to the human race, H&HS Director Chris said at meetings Monday and Tuesday, and so humanity has no resistance to it and no vaccinations have yet been developed to prevent it....

SR 4 Slide Update Tamara Greenwell, the lead communicator for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), communicated to me that the cleanup efforts are ongoing and going well. She indicated that each day crews are hauling out large amounts of debris. They posted a new video showing the cleanup progress on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wsoQv--7AG5o. WSDOT estimated about 50,000 cubic yards of rocks, soil and dirt slid off KM Mountain on January 23. This is sufficient debris to fill...

Oneida Is Gone but Not Forgotten Oneida Road and the few residents that live there today is a visible reminder of a once thriving community that became a ghost town nearly a century ago. The Columbia River, Grays River, and Deep River were the main highways for the early settlers who settled in what was to be called Oneida. They were mainly from Sweden and Finland and they cleared the land and built their homes. As these first pioneer families, who had relatives in the east, began to flourish, it became necessary to have a school and a post...

Oneida Road As a relatively new person to the county by local standards, it has been my pleasure to travel the different roads in the area. I have seen some of the maintenance needs on Eden Valley Road, Hull Creek Road, and Shannon Road. They all have their needs, but the one that really stuck out in my mind was Oneida Road. Not that this road was any different, but there were so many spots on Oneida Road that are dangerous to oncoming traffic because the road is not wide enough. The road has...

  • Happy Valentine's Day to everyone

    Kay Chamberlain|Feb 13, 2020

SOGGY--As of this writing, we are measuring just a snitch shy of 50" of rainfall since the beginning of the year; that's wet! However, when the weekend showed up, it got drier, albeit colder, but hey, we got to see the sun shining after the fog lifted and well, that was so welcomed after days of gloom and steady rainfall! The clear weather also meant we got to see some fantastic views of the "Snow Moon" so that was pretty special as well. In some areas around here, there were even some pretty hefty winds blowing one night, so some calm days...

American Legion Crab & Oyster Feed Saturday evening was quite a delight for the supporters of the annual American Legion crab and oyster dinner. Some of those who live on the east side of KM were not aware that as of approximately four p.m., Friday the highway was open to single lane traffic. They took the ferry to Westport then on to Astoria to cross the bridge to come back to Rosburg. That is a two hour drive one way. Fortunately they had a shorter ride back over KM. Dale Rose informed me that...

  • School bond does not reflect real world costs

    Feb 6, 2020

To The Eagle: First let me say that I am in favor of providing the best education possible in the best facility possible in our community. I think school facility maintenance and repair is an ongoing responsibility of school administration, not a once in a generation undertaking. My issue with what has been proposed for our school is the overall cost. I once served on a school board in a small Washington community and we needed to build a new school for K through 12 grades. That school was 33,000 square feet, the year was 1990 and the cost to...

We have been advised by ESD112 [SW WA Education Svc District] to approximate construction costs at about $400 per square foot. I have been in contact with the superintendent of South Bend’s school district. They are buildin...

SR 4 to Open As of Sunday afternoon SR 4 was still closed, yet a single lane had been prepared for traffic with the automatic signal light at each side of the slide area. A worker on site informed me that the road may be open this week, but not to quote him. Celeste Dimichina from the WSDOT southwest office in Vancouver informed me on Monday morning that as far as she knew the highway would still be closed indefinitely. By the time readers get this story the road could be open, but with more rain expected, only God really knows. Dimichina sent...

Flooding in Grays River Every year the rains bring the chance of flooding to the Grays River watershed along with landslides. This is the beginning of a new year and we have had both. It is one thing to be isolated because of the flooding, but the major landslide on SR 4 blocked everyone from going east. I was not able to travel anywhere and I live near the Methodist Church in Grays River. Adam Storm sent me a pic from his cannabis store with the intention for me to come down and see it for...
