Because the dates line up, The Eagle has decided to reprint events from 1975. Thank you to the Wahkiakum County Historical Socciety, volunteer Julie O’Neil and volunteer curator, genealogist and board member Kari Kandoll. Skamokawa News By Mrs. Howard Madden Thanks to the help of our Daughter-in-law, Judy, I got all my fruit canned, frozen and jammed in “jig” time. The Pinamotis and the Pat Maddens were here for dinner on Saturday. Louise prepared a delicious Chinese meal for us, a real treat. Pat Thacker left Friday to attend the Milla...

GLOOMY START. As this week begins, it’s pretty gloomy and a bit damp this Sunday morning, but by the time you read this, it’s supposed to be nicer and drier, and will give all of us who still have outdoor work to do, another chance to get some things done. I swear this summer went by so fast that I can’t believe we’re in the latter half of yet another month and the holidays are fast approaching...yikes! So, if you’re one of those folks who still needs to wash your outside windows or clean out those gutters, or get that extra stock of wood alre...

When Wallie Garvey invited me to his home for an interview, I was glad he had warned me to bring a four-wheel drive vehicle. His house sits far from the main road and getting there is not for the faint of heart. Several miles down Altoona-Pillar Rock Road on a sunny afternoon I reached the steep, rocky climb that snakes up through the trees toward his property. I'm no stranger to tricky roads, so I shifted our Dodge Ram into four-wheel drive and forged ahead. It's not a road I'd want to tackle...
Well, I'm back from northeast Ohio, and I must say it was a wonderful trip. The weather was perfect. The leaves were just beginning to turn. My folks are doing fine for folks who are 84 and 85. A glitch here and there - Mom's Parkinson's and Dad's COPD - but they're muddling through and doing well. I had a chance to share a meal with some high school buddies (class of 1982), met some new Newton Falls residents, played with a couple dozen dogs, generally sat for a spell, and relived the late 70s...
Plant garlic soon Plant garlic by Oct. 15 to avoid planting in very wet soil from fall rains. Unless your soil is very well drained, make a small, raised bed. Add some lime (three pounds for a 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed) and some organic or conventional “complete” fertilizer. Plant garlic cloves with the bottom of the clove about four inches deep into the bed. Rows can be spaced about 12 inches apart and the cloves about three to four inches apart in the row. The larger the clove you plant, the larger the bulb you will get next summer. Mulch t...

The organization received its non-profit status in 2000 and began working with children in...
I recently reached my five-year mark as City Administrator here in Rainier. This milestone has given me the chance to reflect on everything that the City has accomplished in that time and a renewed sense of optimism about its overall direction moving forward. Not too long after I started this position, three long-time councilors moved out of the City around the same time. The councilors who replaced them were a combination of some who had previously served and others who added new experiences and perspectives to the body. Citizen participation...

Columbia County Cultural Coalition (CCCC) has received a $20,000 grant through the Rebuilding and Expansion Grant Program of the Oregon Community Foundation. These funds will be added to the annual allocation from the Oregon Cultural Trust of $15,262. Traditionally, CCCC has offered matching grants of up to $2,000 to art, culture and history projects within Columbia County. Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Ralph Watkins spent the last 12 years in Alaska. With a couple of those years being spent in Shishmaref, a town Watkins described as a "poster child for climate change," the newly appointed superintendent learned a lot about community while living in these Alaskan villages. Wanting to not only work in communities of 2,000 people or less, as well as being closer to his aging mother and father in Los Angeles, Calif., Watkins, along with his wife and son,...
Protecting existing programs and restoring funding cuts that were made to help balance the state budget will be the focus of the Washington State Board of Education in the 2026 legislative session. “We’re looking at a framework that responds to the budget realities while also keeping student needs at the forefront,” Yazmin Carretero, the board’s government relations and policy analyst, told members in their August meeting. The legislative platform communicates the board’s top priorities to the Legislature and will guide the legislati...
This 2025 season, Flynn Creek Circus invites audiences to ‘The Bridge,’ a spellbinding new show inspired by a wolf, Nordic legend, and the kinetic architecture of connection. Narrated through the voice of the silly Goat and his stubborn Shadow, The Bridge takes viewers on a journey with massive acrobatic stunts, irreverent comedy, and masterful showmanship. Meet the troubled Troll, the empty headed Emperor and the Red Countess as they encounter the realm of the wolf. The Ferryman and the Star enchant with feats of elegant skill. True to Fly...

HELLO. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to read? This human invention of reading is not a natural skill for humans, we must be taught it. Just something to ponder. WESTEND DELIVERY. We look forward to providing our Westend county library members with this delivery/pick-up service. This is a pilot program. Together, with your support, we can make it work. A recent donation to St. James Family Center (SJFC) made quite a stir at the end of August. Beaverton-based Pacific Office Automation (POA) gave $1000 and eight NASCAR tickets as a contribution to St James' "40 for 40" campaign, which celebrates the 40 years SJFC has been a part of Wahkiakum County's landscape. The NASCAR tickets may seem a bit random; however, POA has a unique relationship with Portland International Raceway. POA is actually the title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Xfinity...
DAMP BEGINNING. Well, as this week begins, I know that many of you aren't too keen about the dampness falling from the sky but there are a whole lot of folks who are relishing in the cool down and the "sprinklers" from the sky. Our yards are pretty parched and our forests are tinder dry, besides, it's September and aren't we supposed to see a shift away from the hot days of summer? SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from Sept. 11 through Sept. 18 are Brittanie Helms-Lampitt, Rex Gilbertsen, Conner Parker, Renee Robert, C...
When Lyle Haataja sits down at his scroll saw, patience is just as important as precision. What began years ago as a curiosity, after a friend gave him a magazine full of scroll saw patterns, has grown into a craft that blends artistry, humor, and a touch of stubborn determination. Initially, it was just a hobby, but Lyle enjoyed the challenge of guiding the fine blade through delicate patterns. Over time, as his skill improved, so did his reputation. He started selling his pieces at local bazaa...
On Friday, Sept. 5, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03) announced she will be holding her twenty-third set of mobile office hours in Pacific County. Residents of Washington’s Third District will be able to walk in to get assistance with federal agencies like the VA, IRS, and State Department. As a part of her commitment to ensure every community can access her services, Perez has held mobile office hours in every county in Washington’s Third District in which she doesn’t have a district office. She has already recovered more than $9.6 milli...
For the love of...porches Porches come in all types; open air, screened in, wrap around, front, back, covered, multi-season, etc. Porches are what I'd been missing all along. They were right there in front of me, and I simply wasn't seeing them. Perhaps I was overlooking them or looking past them. Have I lost you? If you'll indulge me for just a minute, I can explain. Every year since we moved back to Washington in 2015, I fly back to northeast Ohio to see my folks, now 84 and 85 and in fine...
I recently interviewed Walker Wernimont for our 30th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. I met up with Walker in Skamokawa early in the morning for our conversation. A volunteer Skamokawa firefighter, Walker had responded to an incident last night. During his work, 12 wasps decided to visit and leave a bit of themselves with him, resulting in little sleep during the night. Walker is originally from Iowa and has lived in Wahkiakum county...
