By Diana Zimmerman I heard Bob Saari mutter something and turned to find him struggling a bit with a rope he was using while perched in a tree nearby. I had been momentarily distracted by the breathtaking view of the Columbia River flowing far beneath the cliff side property belonging to Richard and Lorielee Schoen in eastern Wahkiakum County where Saari was working. His quiet frustration alerted me to a potential problem, and I suddenly found myself assessing the descent. I felt my stomach...
The effort to find the cause of elk hoof disease has turned into a scientific quest. The disease attacks the hooves of elk, eating away the foot and causing them to walk on soft tissue. The hooves grow long and can eventually slough off. The disease was first observed in southwest Washington but has been observed in Clallam County, the Skagit River valley, east of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon along the state line and into Idaho. Residents of southwest Washington have noticed a decrease...
In an election with low turnout, voters in Wahkiakum and Pacific counties joined others across the state in deciding few contested races and showing their will on statewide issues. In one of the few contested local races, Bill Wainwright defeated Janis Dodrill 76-42 in a race for a position on the Cathlamet Town Council. In another contested local race, incumbent Brian O'Connor held off challenger Austin Smith in a race for a seat on the Port District 2 board of commissioners, 241-166. In a contested race for Pacific/Wahkiakum Superior Court...
Tricks and treats were up for grabs at the annual Neewollah Day Celebration at the Bank of the Pacific last Thursday. Children, adults, and even some dogs came in costume. One participant, Henri Ervest, fully embraced his logger costume and attempted to cut down the bank's sign. There were balloon animals, a raffle and prizes, lots of candy, and to be sure, the piñata was a real hit. See more photos at www.waheagle.com. Photos by Diana Zimmerman....

Besides budget work, commissioners approved installation of gates at the KM Transfer Station and design of expanded restroom facilities on the ferry Oscar B. Commissioners and department heads have been discussing requests for two weeks, and the board completed that work Monday and Tuesday. The board agreed to follow recommendations of a salary committee to adjust wages and salaries of union, non-union and elected...
The Wahkiakum County Noxious Weed Control Board met on Monday to discuss how to begin dealing with milfoil in particular, as well as other invasive species, in a more proactive manner. Kyle Langan of Aquatechnix was on hand to answer questions about how the board might begin to tackle milfoil, which is clogging the Elochoman Slough Marina and other waterways in the county. Langan recommended a newer product, ProcellaCOR. “It kills the plant forever,” Langan said, “a fragment is going to have...
Jacobe Conrad of Cathlamet has been named 2019 State Trooper of the Year by the American Legion, Post 48 of Ilwaco. He also received a Life Saving Award from the Washington State Patrol in October for his good work during an event in September. Conrad joined the Washington State Patrol in April of 2017. Lee Tischer once witnessed a sad scene at an away football game: An elderly man who volunteered on the sidelines, as a member of what Tischer affectionately calls the Chain Gang, was asked to give up his spot in the middle of the game when the home coach realized the man could not keep up with the offense. "He had to be pushing 80," Tischer said. The man walked round the track after, Tischer said, his head hung down. In the back of his mind, Tischer knew then that he would retire from the...
"I got the booby prize," Tom Irving said. Irving, who served in the Army's Sixth Infantry Division during World War II, moving through the South Pacific from New Guinea to the Philippines and conducting mechanized reconnaissance, was certain that at 97 he would easily be the oldest veteran on his recent Puget Sound Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It wasn't to be. There were 50 veterans on the trip, five who served in WWII, and one of them was 99. A really old two dollar bill made the trip too....

Wahkiakum County officials continued their presentation of preliminary budget requests this week, starting with a long discussion with department heads over pay increases. Throughout 2019, elected officials and staff have been working through a salary committee to standardize pay scales across all departments in large part to eliminate inequities in compensation. They've also considered increases for elected and appointed officials, who are paid lower than in many other similar size counties. "We've discussed wage increases for union and...
Local governmental bodies are busy with comprehensive plans and 2020 budgeting. Port District 2 will act on its 2020 budget when its board of commissioners meet Nov. 19, 5 p.m., at the Skamokawa United Methodist Church building; they've also started work on updating the port's comprehensive plan and are inviting public comment on activities the port district could pursue. [The original version of this story incorrectly listed the location of the port commission's Nov. 19 meeting. Port commissioners have permanently changed their monthly...
Some of the ladies who watched me grow up in church won't be too pleased to read the story I'm about to share, so to them, I simply say, read the next few paragraphs with at least one eye closed. Two might be better. To others who are not so easily offended, read on. Back in New Jersey, many, many years ago, Rich Casapulla's father, Thomas, played the trumpet. He played it well enough for the likes of Vaughn Monroe, and in those days, that was saying something. I'd never heard of Monroe, but my...

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced Thursday that razor clam digging will move ahead at Twin Harbors and Long Beach this weekend after tests revealed that shellfish from these coastal beaches are safe to eat. Testing conducted by the Washington Department of Health (WDOH) on Thursday showed domoic acid levels were low enough for the digs to go ahead, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. "The health and safety of clam diggers is always our first concern, so we appreciate people's patience while we worked...
Work on the Puget Island bridge moves toward completion. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, crews need to finish paint coat applications on the pedestrian rail, install compression and strip seals at expansion joints, install the permanent signs and pavement markings, and remove all traffic control devices. The contractor anticipates work to be completed in a few weeks. The department hasn't yet made a final decision about what to do with the osprey nest; the...
The war in Vietnam was no different than any other war with the exception that when these veterans returned home, there was not a welcoming with a throng of people waving flags and a brass band playing. This happened to thousands upon thousands of men and women who proudly served our country with honor and distinction. Many of these honorable people went to their graves without ever really getting the recognition they deserved. Thanks to Puget Sound Honor Flight that has changed for some. I was...
The Cathlamet Town Council acted on a variety of issues and revisited the ongoing dispute over parking at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. After going over project details, the council approved shoreline development and conditional use permit for River Mile 38 Brewery. Brewery representative Rex Czuba said the building would be along the waterfront of the Elochoman Slough Marina; it would have a patio deck, and overall seating would be more than double that of the present quarters. The deck would be open to the public during business...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports and went over the 2020 budget at their meeting on Tuesday. General Manager Dave Tramblie said he had spoken to Bonneville Power Administration regarding a possible overcharge. “I think we’re going to be where we should be, but the moral of the story is that we need to keep an eye on that,” Tramblie said. “I believe that is going to be resolved appropriately. I give kudos to BPA for being really responsive.” Tramblie also said...
The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors learned about the Career Technical Education program, transportation issues, and got an update on the FISH Center on Tuesday. Vocational/Agriculture teacher Kyle Hurley went over his five year plan for the Career Technical Education program, which he needed the school board to approve in order to receive Perkins grant funds. The board later approved the plan and the grant. Hurley will use the funds to update curriculum by purchasing 40 new...
Changes are coming to Westport, Oregon after Clatsop County was awarded a $450,000 grant from Business Oregon to repair a dock and dredge the Westport Slough. Army Corps of Engineers and another contractor to prepare the slough for commercial use. The entire project is expected to cost about $1.15 million...
Wahkiakum County commissioners revisited concerns about placement of dredged sand inside Puget Island dikes and handled other business on Tuesday. East Sunny Sands Road resident Bob Getchell expressed concern that a contractor working for the US Army Corps of Engineers wasn't following proper procedures for clearing a lot on Sunny Sands that dredging crews will use to pump sand inside the dike for Columbia River channel maintenance. He also said the dredging crews should have to meet normal noise standards, such as operating between 7 a.m. and...
