The Mules took advantage of smart base running and numerous Comet errors as they sent the Comets packing with a 15-1 defeat last Friday in Cathlamet. Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs. However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters. Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and...

A strong second-half comeback wasn’t enough to keep the Wahkiakum Mules’ season alive as they fell 59-54 to the Pe Ell Trojans last Friday night in the Class 2B boys basketball tournament at Rochester High School. Things looked grim early on for the Mules after a tough-luck first half in which nothing seemed to fall through the nets, putting the team in a 13-point hole at the break. The second half was a whole different story. The Mules came storming back to tie the game at 46-46 less than two minutes into the final frame. The Trojans hit som...
Wahkiakum High School junior Blayne Edwards won the state Class B wrestling championship in his 103 lb. weight class last Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Edwards started the tournament with a 12-2 decision over freshman Jesus Dominguez of Warden. Next, he defeated sophomore Taylor Woodruff of Liberty Bell with a 15-0 technical fall. That win put him in the championship match against freshman Tony Raupp of Winlock, and Edwards pinned Raupp in 1:29. The title is the first state championship in the history of the Mule wrestling program. "It has been...
The Mule Wrestling team took eight wrestlers in to the regional wrestling tournament last weekend at Chief Leschi, and four earned the right to continue their season to the state tournament. Only the top three wrestlers in each weight class from the western side of the mountains advance to the state Mat Classic this weekend in the Tacoma Dome. At 103 lbs., Blayne Edwards continued his winning streak. After a first round bye in the eight man bracket, Blayne finished the day with two pins and first place. "This makes him one of the two first...
The Wahkiakum Mules came up just short last Thursday night against the Toutle Lake Ducks in Castle Rock, suffering a 50-49 defeat. The last second finish didn’t come without much controversy though, as an apparent blown call on an offensive rebound by Brett Chaput left those who saw the play in complete shock, myself included. With only 2.6 seconds remaining and the Mules trailing by two, Wyatt Parker pulled in a rebound on the defensive end and was fouled in the process. Parker stepped up to the free throw line to shoot a one-and-one with t...
The Naselle Comette defense was too much for the Wahkiakum Lady Mules as Naselle won a 49-29 2B Girls District Tournament basketball team Tuesday in Rochester. The Mules had a tough time advancing the ball down the court against the Comets full-court pressure and open looks from the field were few and far between. The Mules mustered only 29 points on eight of 55 shooting from the field and 11 for 29 from the free throw line. The loss ends the Lady Mules' season. The Comettes had a much better night, shooting 38 percent as they rolled to a...
At the time of the year when wrestlers need to either “come big or go home early,” the Wahkiakum Mule team showed up as large as life. With five wrestlers in the finals and eight advancing to the regional tournament at Chief Leschi this weekend, the team has put in the necessary work to compete at the tournament time level. Junior Blayne Edwards continued his dominating streak, pinning his opponent in the first round at 103. Freshman Mason Mackey gave the team its second champion at 119 with a repeat performance, first period pin. Jesus Cra...
The Mule wrestling team finished up their regular season competition with a mix-n-match at home last week verses the other league teams. These matches were the final competitions setting up seeding for this Saturday’s sub-regional tournament in Ocosta. Blayne Edwards established the pace for the team with a quick pin in his only match of the night. "Blayne sits as the number one seed at 103 and is favored to be the first state champion from Wahkiakum," said Coach Matt Stacy. Jesus Crawford continued the pin streak in both of his matches and i...
The Toutle Lake Ducks looked like state tournament material as they handed the Wahkiakum Lady Mules a 58-16 Central League loss on Monday. The Ducks, ranked third in the Associated Press pole, rolled to a 16-0 first quarter lead as the Mules couldn't handled their man-to-man defense made lots of turnovers. The Mules played their best play in the second quarter, scoring 12 points as the Duck coaches inserted reserves. The Ducks turned up the intensity in the second half and controlled the play. For the Mules, Brianne Helms, Ellee Crouse and Blai...
It was a tough week for Wahkiakum Mule players, coaches, and fans alike as the team dropped two road games and one at home, pushing their season-high losing streak to five games. Last Thursday the Mules hosted the Napavine Tigers and much like their entire season has gone, the offense failed to gain any momentum early, scoring just 21 points through the first three quarters before finding a rhythm in the fourth that netted 16 points for a disappointing 65-37 loss. Wyatt Parker was the lone Mule in double-figures with 16 points to go along with...
