Beautiful Easter Day: It is a beautiful morning. My coffee is fresh, my dog and the birds have been fed, and I hope all my readers are also enjoying the early hours of the day. Easter was a family day for sure out this way. I enjoy the children no matter the day. I have no grandchildren so I "borrow" kids from neighbors and friends. Valley pastures look like beautifully groomed lawns in the spring and with all the baby animals in the valleys, it's a joy to live here. Beautiful Growing...

The April WordFest program will feature poets of the lower Columbia region, including Cathlamet's Dayle Olson. Heading the event will be Astoria Poet Florence Sage. Joining Florence will be local poets Jan Bono from Long Beach, Charolette...

  • Meet our Seniors: Braxton Johns

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 8, 2021

Braxton Johns has been active in sports at Wahkiakum High School, playing football, taking on track and golf, but his favorite activity is easily wrestling. "It's taught me a lot," Braxton said. "It taught me how to be humble, how to lose, and how to win. It's taught me how to focus, work hard, and not blame others for mistakes." The wrestling team works so hard, Braxton explained, that there are times when people want to quit, but teammates build each other up, and encourage each other to...

  • Meet our Seniors: Mary Jane Neves

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 8, 2021

Mary Jane Neves is looking forward to attending Lower Columbia College in the fall, where she can continue to explore and find out just what it is that she likes. She isn't totally sure what that is just yet, and knows there is a lot more out there to discover. As for right now? "School is going good, sports are going good," Mary Jane said. When it comes to teachers, she can't pick a favorite, but admits when she was a freshman, it was Mr. Cox, who she says always insists that he doesn't like...

  • Meet our Seniors: Ellie Hiatt

  • Easter egg hunts are scheduled

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 1, 2021

NOT SO NICE--As this week begins, it's a wet and blustery Palm Sunday, so it's a good day to hunker down inside after making sure all one's outside objects have been securely fastened down. However, forecasters are saying some dry days are ahead prior to what looks to be a wet Easter weekend, but let's hope they're wrong about that. It seems our Spring keeps springing surprising weather on us, but we all hope that comes to an end before long as I know folks are itching to get outside and dig in those flower beds and get those gardens going;...

So it's Monday again. They just keep coming, don't they? For many of us, they are days to make lists, get started on work for the week and think about the trash pick up on Tuesday. What if we saw Mondays as opportunities to meet new people or to plan a day of service to the community? To make a date with a friend for lunch. I lunched with Trudy Fredrickson last week. She used to write this column, remember? She was such an angel to me when I had my cancer treatments. Trudy had eye surgery last w...

  • Fire department has two new trucks

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 25, 2021

WET--I wish the forecast had been wrong and our Spring weather had shown up with more sun than rain, but it was pretty wet off and on this past Saturday. I hate to complain about it much though as many areas of our country were dealing with tornadoes and snow storms and were experiencing much worse conditions than we were. Currently our forecast calls for a couple of dry days on Friday and Saturday, so we hope that forecast holds! NOT SO GREAT--My cousin in Australia, Pam Everest, was showing me pictures of the massive amount of flooding in...

  • Studded tire removal deadline is March 31

    Mar 25, 2021

The Washington State Department of Transportation reminds drivers that state law requires all studded tires to be removed by the end of the day Wednesday, March 31. Tire removal services can get crowded near the removal deadline, so plan accordingly...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 25, 2021

Movin' On: Yesterday was Sunday and the traffic changed on Loop Road in front of my house. For the 17 years I've lived here, I've watched weekend visitors drive by to the bridge. First, they go by to get to the bridge, then they go by to get back to SR 4, so I assume they went to the Covered Bridge. I suspect the new longer "detour" will cause drivers from Oregon to choose SR 4 to get back, rather than the longer drive on 101 to get to the Astoria Bridge and Highway 30. So I'm assuming we'll...
