  • The Wahkiakum County Fair starts today

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 15, 2019

WETNESS--As this week begins, we are seeing some dampness in West Valley, which is one of those "good/bad" things, depending on what you had planned. For many, the rain means an automatic watering of our lawns and flowers without doing it by hand, and the fact that our forests and surrounding areas got a drink and may have helped with the fire danger, well, that's always appreciated. If you had an outdoor event planned, it probably wasn't too welcomed and if you were still dealing with putting in your hay, well, the rain was truly not welcomed...

  • Cancer treatment center offers valuable care

    Aug 8, 2019

To The Eagle: I understand the concerns folks may have about the loss of chemotherapy services at Ocean Beach Hospital, especially the loss of Dr. Law. He is a fine man and a very experienced oncologist. If anyone in the area is wondering about the new Cancer Center at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, I want to assure them that the doctors and staff there are caring, experienced and helpful beyond what is required. In 2017, I found out I had cancer the day after Christmas. It was a shock. I was sent to an oncology center in Vancouver,...

  • Overnight bridge closures begin Monday

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 8, 2019

TOASTY--For those who love the heat, we certainly have had plenty as temperatures were right up in the 80s for the weekend, so many of the outdoor events, like the Wooden Boat Festival and Ugly Car Show in Cathlamet, didn't have to worry about wearing boots or rain jackets! Instead, one needed something for the shade and something to keep hydrated, so here's hoping you found some of both there this weekend. Cloudy conditions greeted us on Monday morning, but it was dry, so I didn't mind at all as it's perfect weather for doing some of those...

  • Horse Gaming Series

    Valerie Antijunti|Aug 8, 2019

After the accidental flooding of the arena two weeks ago, we were able to run the third show in the series. We had a very nice turn out with 21 riders in attendance. Results are as follows: Pee Wee 11 and under: 4. Whitney Ellenbolt, 3. Kaitlyn Jessee, 2. Tru Most and 1. Abby Doan. It is a very close race between Abby Doan and Tru Most for first place. We really want to keep and eye on them. A very strong contender for 2. is Kaitlyn Jessee. She is new to our series, this being her first year. Watch out Abby and Tru, Kaitlyn is coming on...

  • Silver Buckle and boat festival this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 1, 2019

LOOKING GOOD--This past weekend was nice, although Saturday morning it began quite wet around here, which was nice for our lawns and plants but not so great for those who had hay down! Luckily, the sun came out and things dried out pretty good and Sunday was all sunshine from the get-go, so that was helpful. It seems we are going to end July with some pretty decent weather and August could start out nice too, but then again, forecasts can change overnight so who knows? We just hope that come fair time, we have some nice, sunny weather, that's...

An Old Barn Over the years traveling to and fro in the Westend, I would go by an old barn in Deep River across the highway from Deep River Camp. I had no idea who owned it and the surrounding property and I assumed it to be abandoned, but during Christmas I would see the barn lit up with Christmas lights. To most it is just an old barn, but to the curious like myself, it is calling me. There are too many stories with this old barn, and I would like to know. One day traveling back from Naselle,...

Genie Cary and her husband Dan, moved to Cathlamet from Oregon in 2005. Having a sailboat allowed her to see many things from a different perspective. Boats, birds, lighthouses, sunrises and sunsets were Cary’s subjects for photography. Cary had a background in scrapbooking, computers and Photoshop, which all came in useful when she was introduced to a photo transfer process called sublimation. Sublimation is printing a photo onto different materials such as metal, hardwood, ceramic, slate and anything that has a polymer coating. She s...
