The Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Easter Bingo was a successful fund raising event! By 6:30 p.m. the multi-purpose room at the grade school was filled with people ready to play bingo. The first number was called, the room turned quiet and all attention was focused on watching bingo cards. Each bingo game winner would take home a big delicious ham or two fresh frozen chickens! After 10 rounds of bingo, it was time for some raffle tickets to be drawn. The generous donations from our community were piled high on a table, raffle ticket numbers call...

Thank you, Wahkiakum County Commissioners Blair Brady and Dan Cothren for stepping up to the plate and passing an ordinance, two votes to one, restricting the use of septic sludge and any biosolids not determined to be Class A in Wahkiakum County. Another thank you to the folks who have supported passing an ordinance, through their letters and phone calls and for attending meetings with regard to this issue. You all know who you are. SUN!--As this week began, the area saw some sunshine, that was the good part. The bad part was that it was below freezing a couple of nights in our area and other parts of the state. Some even saw snow! It was great to see the sun shining, and I know folks were busy mowing their lawns and washing their cars, but the temperatures sure could have been warmer. With some areas back east expecting over a foot of snow this week and over 200 tornadoes tearing through the south and killing dozens of people last weekend, I guess we shouldn't complain...
At least we are seeing some real spring like weather the past few days. The temperatures are still colder than normal, I think. The poor cherry trees and apple trees aren’t sure whether they should start to bloom or not. I guess we just have to chalk it up to “global warming.” News from Naselle Naselle-Grays River Valley School sports calendar for the coming week: Thursday-baseball at Naselle vs. Northwest Christian at 3:30 p.m., track at Wahkiakum at 3:30 p.m.; Friday-JV baseball at Wahkiakum at 3:30 p.m.; Monday-fastpitch and baseball in Nase...
The Fairgrounds were the site of the Wahkiakum County Fair Board's Used Book and Rummage Sale last weekend! We had lots of people stop by and purchase books and other good, useable items that were for sale. It was nice to visit with everyone that stopped by, seemed like a mini-fair get together. We plan on having used book sales and rummage sales at least once a month. Our community has donated items we still need to pick up for our next sale in May and we will also be receiving 20 boxes of good books to sell at this sale. Watch this column...
DIFFERENT DAYS--As the week began, it was absolutely miserable in West Valley, with rain coming down so hard on Sunday night that I wondered if I should be building an ark! However, it was great to see the work week begin with sunshine, as Monday was great, albeit windy, but that's okay, as at least we were able to let things dry out a little bit and the wind sometimes helps that happen a little faster. With a couple of nice days to follow, we are all quite pleased as the grass seems to grow faster than we can get the lawn mower filled up, so...
I have a message for the many people who have inquired about the Silver Buckle Series Game Show. We are planning the Game Series! I will have the three event dates in my Fair column next week. This year we plan to run these events at each game show: Poles, Figure 8, Key Poles, Speed Barrels, International Flags and Texas Barrels. We may add another game event or two to the above list. I am studying three new patterns that I think would be fun for the gaming crowd. If you have a horse gate key and would like to volunteer to run the patterns in...
Welcome sunshine! At least intermittently, for the past few days. Looks like more wet stuff on the way, but at least we know there is a sun. I found my first trillium on the hill above the house. Kinda late but beautiful. They always remind me of my mom. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation had to cancel their Chicken and Dumpling dinner on Sunday, April 10 due to a family emergency of "chef" Janet Bryan. Foundation members felt it was best to cancel the dinner rather than struggle through without her. The Foundation plans to reschedule the dinner as soon as feasible. GRAY START--As this week begins, it's gray but dry and I woke to temperatures in the 30s. This is Spring? They say we're going to get lots of rain and by the end of the week it will be below freezing, so obviously Old Man Winter has not let go of his cold and miserable grip on us just yet. On Saturday we were even dodging heavy hail storms, between some sun breaks, so we had a bit of everything. SPECIAL DAYS--It seems I looked at the wrong month and got some dates mixed up last week so if you see a repeat of names this week, you'll understand...
Saturday we had a group of 10 volunteers painting the horse barn stalls and poster wall. Horse Barn Superintendent Valerie Antijunti bought blue paint for the poster wall that matches the color of the metal on the outside of the barn. The inside of the stalls were painted red, the color made them look very clean and bright. At noon the volunteers took a break from painting and were served a picnic lunch with hamburgers barbecued by Lois Wakefield. The volunteers worked until they ran out of stalls that were ready to paint, a combined total of...
