If you got down to the Marina the Duck Inn showcased a couple of the bands that will be at the fairgrounds. Steelhead will be at the fair on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the Nash Brothers will be on stage both Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. the Fat Bottom Girls will take the stage on Friday and Saturday. A variety of dog activities will take place at Misty Rivers Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island this weekend. On Friday and Saturday the Willamette Valley Basenji Club will host their Annual Basenji Specialty Show. This is an AKC sanctioned show for Basenjis only which will include puppy sweepstakes and regular conformation showing on Friday, and conformation showing on Saturday. A new Hunter Education Course is scheduled for July 30 and August 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elochoman Slough Marina covered area. This is a traditional course designed for new or inexperienced hunters, however, anyone who wishes can take the course. County officials are implementing a burn ban in Wahkiakum County, effective 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 15, 2022. Officials from Wahkiakum County will enact a ban on all outdoor burning. As of July 15, 2022, all land clearing, residential and silvicultural burning is banned until further notice. This burn ban does not apply to federally managed land within Wahkiakum County. Starting July 16, callers can reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988, and calls placed without an area code will no longer work in Washington. The Cathlamet Public Library's Children's Summer Reading Program continues with Wednesday Events at Erickson Park. On July 6 the theme was lighthouses and shipwrecks. A fun experiment called for making an aluminum foil boat and seeing how many pennies it could hold before sinking. Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 has recognized local businesses for support of the buddy poppy program. Twelve businesses volunteered to have Buddy Poppies and donation containers placed in their business. Wahkiakum VFW Post 5297 has two Buddy Poppy drives each year, one in November, during the Veterans Day holiday, and the other in May, during the Memorial Day holiday. A disc golfer was overheard remarking on the view from the clubhouse at Skyline Golf Course before joining his team at a tournament on a sunny Sunday morning. "It's so beautiful," he said. Dear Neighbors: (written on Monday) We all love July 4 for any number of reasons. I like having a long weekend to work in my yard and watch the fireworks down valley at the Zimmerman farm. They always have great fireworks. I sat on a lawn chair in my front yard and watched a long time, but I realized the echoes were exciting all by themselves. When Cathlamet resident Terry Bonny passed recently passed away, he left behind a grieving community. He was a family man, friend, teacher, coach, artist, and he was a golfer! His neighbors, Connie and Joe Long, Matt and Carlotta Alpdemir, and Tom and Susan Gentry, wanted a way to honor Terry.
