NICE--As this week begins, our cool and foggy mornings have been followed by some wonderful sunny days. While we's like to see this continue, we all know these days may soon end so I hope we're all prepared for the inclement weather that is bound to come our way. AUCTION--The Friends of Skamokawa want me to remind you that their online auction has begun as of last Saturday, Oct. 8. They hope you've been able to check out their items up for auction at www.32auctions.com/auction FOS 2022. This is an important fund raising event so I hope you'll...
SHORT--Due to technical difficulties, once again this will be a very brief column. FOS AUCTION--The "Cornucopia of Treasures" online auction begins this Saturday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. and will go until Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. To take part in this important Friends of Skamokawa fundraising event, go to www.32auctions.com/auctionfos2022. FLEA MARKET--This will take place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. GIFT OF WARMTH--Please donate all your gently used or if possible new "warm" items for the Puget...
NICE BEGINNING--As this work week begins, it's a very pleasant 75 degrees in West Valley, so this Fall weather isn't too bad, but by the time you read this, you may have experienced some raindrops, or are just doing so if you get this on Thursday. With ever changing weather models, we never know exactly who will see the "wet stuff" but I'm actually hoping for a bit of it so that all our springs and plants get a bit of a drink! As we end yet another month, I'd say we've had a pretty pleasant...
NICE START--As this third week in September begins, it’s a pretty nice day and looks to be until the end of the week when we could possibly get a shower. Last Friday saw a pretty substantial “shower” for a much longer period of time than was expected, but most of us in West Valley were certainly not complaining because we sure needed it. I understand that many folks in the area stayed dry but we certainly didn’t in my neck of the woods and that was fine by me. Actually, it was a good reminder of all the things that still need to be done wh...
DAMPNESS--This week begins with a bit of moisture in West Valley and a big sigh of relief from all my plants and brown grass I’m sure! We started this Sunday with just a smidgen of rain in the morning hours but by evening time we had some “real rain” and it was almost surreal to hear the sound of some steady rainfall coming down as it’s been awhile. I’m pretty sure everyone who got some rain is happy that it definitely helped clear out the smoky conditions we had been having, so besides watering my lawn for me, it’s helped me breathe better. Lo...
STILL SUNNY--As I begin this column, we’re still enjoying the sunshine although a few sprinkles did appear in a couple of spots over the weekend but as usual, not everyone got them. I was happy that the plants around my place are mostly “leaf feeders” and they got a little drink at least. One can tell Fall is in the air as the evening temps dropped considerably and the leaves are starting to crackle and drop, so it won’t be long and my “green” view will give way to an orange and brown view prior to the bare look, which isn’t nearly as nic...
SUNNY DAYS--It looks like we’ve been given a dry stretch of weather this week, although we did get a slight bit of moisture over the weekend. Of course it was very slight and only fell in some areas, but I thought it was still nice to have my leaf feeding plants get a bit of a drink at least. I still think those 70 degree temperatures are really ideal so when it climbs up into those 80s and 90s, like we are experiencing here on Monday, I think many of the folks working or practicing sports in that heat are wishing it wasn’t quite so toa...
SUNNY START--After a weekend that saw a few showers out here in West Valley, we were back to sunny skies as this work week begins. Unless things change drastically, it appears we are in for a dry week, and even longer, so it looks like our Summer is going to continue for a bit. Considering there has been some massive flash flooding in other parts of our country, I am certainly happy to be here in the Pacific Northwest at the moment. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Aug. 25-31, are Katie Phillips, Lou Ann Hedges, Devon Mueller,...
WARM WEEK--As the week begins, we’re seeing very warm temperatures again with my thermometers looking at temps in the low to mid-80s and that’s plenty for me. However, temps could rise a little higher just prior to the paper coming out and then by Friday, it’s supposed to cool down. Current weather models even show a chance of some showers on Friday, with temps at 70 degrees but who knows if that will show up or not, and beings it’s fair time, most would hope it does not, but it wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve been in a drought, on...
STILL TOASTY--Maybe I’m in the minority but I have had enough of the heat wave thing already! We are supposed to cool down some by midweek, which would be nice as it’s in the mid-90s at the beginning of this week, and that’s too hot for me! Here’s hoping you and all your animals are staying cool and hydrated someplace during the hotter parts of the day. TRAGEDY--Our sincerest condolences to the family of the two young men who lost their lives in the Columbia River this past Saturday; just so very tragic. A huge thank you to all those who res...
STILL TOASTY--As I begin to write this column, it’s still in the mid-80s but we may see temps in the 70s during the week before heading right back up come the weekend, so I hope all you sun lovers are enjoying this dry spell. A few days ago, they were predicting a bit of rainfall for this week, but beings that seems to have changed, I hope everyone is very careful with all their heat sources right now as we certainly don’t need to be dealing with an out of control wildfire in our area. Here’s to man and beast staying safe and hydrated and a...
WORD OF THE WEEK; HOT!--It seems summer is upon us as we are seeing all these toasty temperatures this week, which was really not enjoyable for somebody like me who doesn't like the heat, but I know others do, so I hope you enjoyed it. However, I heard some of you got a bit sunburned, so I do feel bad for you and hopefully you're feeling better by now. I understand that the weekend temps are going to be in the mid to upper 70s so while it's still going to be plenty warm out there, at least it...
GREAT TIME--Another Bald Eagle Days festival is in the books and what a great time it was. Everyone was commenting how many folks were in town, how many vendors there were and how many things there were to do, besides all the music and food that was available, so kudos to the organizers and to all those who took part in the parade, etc.; it was terrific! The fireworks show at the end of the day was the “frosting on the cake” and for those who were experiencing all the fun for the first time, they seemed mighty impressed. I think most folks als...
NICE BEGINNING--We wound up with a real nice weekend and as this week begins, we’re off to another nice, dry, warm day and I do hope you’re all taking advantage of this wonderful stretch of “finally Summer” weather! It’s too bad we all have nine million things to do after such a long, dreary wet Spring, and so trying to pick what to do first in our long list of chores is fairly daunting, but here’s hoping you just took a giant leap and dove into that list head first. If we do get a lengthy spell of dry weather, just remember that we can dry...
NICE HOLIDAY--This past Monday was the Fourth of July and it was pretty doggone nice considering the forecast had been for rain, so the dry weather with some sunshine that opted to show up was great! We had a few sprinkles during the weekend here but not everybody did, so it wasn’t too bad for those who traveled here and there to enjoy the early fireworks that took place in various locations. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 7-13 are Jaiden Mahitka, Patty Dursteler, David Shrum, Mallory Bosch, Irene Martin, Jalynn Rainey, B...
HOT ONE--After complaining about all the dreary wet days, we’ve finally got some hot ones, and we’re complaining a bit about those too, as it’s just too hot! Well, at least for a lot of us, as when you’re in the upper 90s, that’s just a bit much for me. While I had a high of 99 here, the Tom Webbs had a reading of 102 at their house! I really feel bad for all the animals that have no shade available to them in order to escape from these high temps and blazing sun. It should go without saying that nobody should be leaving a child or a pet in th...
SUMMER IS COMING--While we begin this work week with some filtered sunshine through the morning cloudiness, we are being told by forecasters that a dry and warm stretch with lots of sunshine is coming our way this first week of summer, so that will be totally awesome! After another stretch of rain had come in last week, I’m thinking the 80 degree temperatures will be most welcomed. I’m more of a 70 degree kind of person myself, so when those high 80s show up, I’m not much of a fan, but for the hay harvesters and the gardeners, and beach lovers,...
MAYBE NICE?--As we have seen, our June weather is definitely Spring weather; as in “springing a leak from every cloud” kind of weather! They say we may be in for a few dry days this coming week, but with temperatures in the low to mid-60s, it’s definitely not going to be setting any heat records. However, summer officially begins on June 21, which is scheduled to be dry, so we’ll hope that’s the beginning of our “real” summer so that our farmers can get those crops to grow and get them harvested before they either drown or rot. Fingers cross...
SOGGY--This past Saturday, when we hoped it would be nice and dry for the car show, we actually had over an inch and a quarter of rain by early evening; a real “sog-fest." This Sunday began wet and breezy but at least it stopped raining for awhile in the afternoon and we even got some sunshine. Unfortunately, the forecast for the week shows only one dry day, but I’m hoping that is wrong as I think we could all use a little more sunshine after such a soggy May. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 9-15 are Brenden McClain, Ter...
NOT GREAT--Those who were counting on a nice Memorial weekend in which they could spend three days in the sun, certainly were disappointed. Most of us definitely saw more rain than sunshine as this month came to a close. Here's to a sunnier June. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from June 2-8 are Becca Keilwitz, Ryan Helms, Robyn Longtain, Jill Havens, Terry Vik, Derrick Bardsley, Michael Wegdahl, Tori Wegdahl, Blain Fritzie, Justin Elfers, Lamar Blix, Rodney Ingersoll, Justin Lindsey, Chloe Cothren, MacKenzie Stevens, Johnnie...
DECENT BEGINNING--I’m beginning this column on Sunday, and it’s starting out fairly decent. Then again, as we saw on Saturday, the sunny day can quickly become a wet one, complete with hail so we’re still dealing with this crazy Spring weather. Not everybody got this sudden burst of nasty weather but it certainly caught those who were in it off guard, as the sunshine had folks sporting light shirts in the 69 degree day, but when that wind brought in those heavy laden clouds that just dumped on us, well the temperature took a quick nose-dive and...
STILL CHILLY/DAMP--The first half of May has certainly been on the damper side of things, which has been fairly disappointing. We had such heavy rain squalls on Sunday, that it took out all reception from the satellite, and of course, really hammered my poor flowers. They say we are supposed to be drying up a bit, so maybe we’ll get a couple of nice days this Friday and Saturday; certainly would be nice! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 19-25 are Kris Parke, Tayler Stornetta, Mitch Moonen, Julie McKinley, Bryson Havens, Elle B...
FAIRLY WET--As I begin this column, the sun is actually shining but there have definitely been some wet moments to the day, and from the looks of it, we’ve got more of that kind of weather headed our way. So, while we may see some dry days now and then, there just doesn’t look to be a string of nice dry days coming our way, which we’d hope to see by now. But as we all know, these Spring forecasts can change at the drop of a hat, so I’m hoping those days that are showing “50 percent chance of rain” wind up being 20 or 30 and that those rain...
MIXED BAG--This past weekend wasn’t too bad compared to other ones and to other places who saw much more rain than we did in West Valley, so I was happy for the sunshine we received. Even this Monday started out a bit drippy but the blue skies that appeared by mid-day were quite enjoyable. Unfortunately they didn’t last, as more rain came in as the day progressed. The forecast is for a couple of drier days early in the week but by the time you read this, it looks to be a pretty soggy weekend. Like it or not, those April showers are lin...
GREAT WEEKEND--I hope you were able to enjoy the glorious weekend weather we had. While we may have some more wet stuff during the week, we are supposed to have another glorious weekend to end April and begin May, so I hope that happens as we could all use a little “Sunshine Medicine” to help brighten our spirits these days. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 28-May 4 are Shannon McClain, Jenna Engle, Carrie Backman, Darren Olsen, Connie Luthi, Troy Heagy, David Faubion, Wolfgang Hoven, Ricky Montgomery, Scott Holland, Car...
