Neither occupant was harmed. A deputy, state patrol, the Skamokawa Fire Department and the Skamokawa ambulance responded. A tow truck was called. Submitted by Suzanne Holmes President, Pioneer Community Association Perseverance is persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Over the years of seemingly never-ending projects, there is no single word that better describes the actions of the Pioneer Community Association than perseverance. We see the Cathlamet Pioneer Center as a work in progress and during the crazy Covid-19 Summer of 2020, despite difficulty and delay, we were able to complete major structural projects that will keep this historic build...
The Tuesday agenda for the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners was short on business items, but commissioners, staff and the public found plenty to discuss. Commissioners heard about drainage problems from a Risk Road resident; they heard reports that the US Army Corps of Engineers is asking certain Columbia River shoreline residents for letters of support for dredging plans; staff reported on needs and status of the county's computer system, and commissioners reported on their activities for the week. Tony Aegerter, a member of the Consoli...
To The Eagle: Joe said at his inauguration “My whole soul is in this, bringing America together, uniting our people, uniting our nation and I ask every American to join me in this cause. Uniting to fight the foes we face: anger, resentment and hatred, extremism, lawlessness, violence, disease, joblessness and hopelessness. With unity, we can do great things, important things.” So far Joe and his swamps are still trying to impeach Trump; over what? Then he signed a few executive orders: stop the construction of the border wall, revoke Trump’s an...
To The Eagle: In the past three decades the attractive brick faced storefront on Main Street now known as The Spar has housed several iterations of the restaurant business: Birnie’s Retreat, then a Bavarian restaurant, then The Hungry Hippo, then a Chinese restaurant, plus a couple of other false starts that never got off the ground. Long vacancies occurred between these tenants. Nothing was really wrong with any of these operations, except the basic fact that Cathlamet is too small a community to support very many restaurants. Stephanie V...
To The Eagle: Dear Mr. Longview PUD board of directors member. Yesterday I was checking to see what result the recent high water in the Elochoman had on the bank work done this summer. I saw you fishing and went over to say howdy and how was the fishing. Long story short we talked a bit and I started walking downstream to see how the exit area of the rebuilt channel along the far bank was working out. You followed me down there. You then got on your walkie talkie and said to the person you were talking to, “Don’t talk to him (me) you can...
MIXED--At the end of last week, we woke up to thick frost and temperatures in the low 20s in West Valley, so that certainly meant another log on the fire for those who use wood heat! Sunday it was back to cool but damp conditions with a moment or two of thick stuff hitting our windshield here, but, just about a mile up the road on KM Mountain, there was some accumlation starting to build, so the snow was not very far away and I heard there were several inches of snow on Beaver Creek. On this Monday morning, we currently have snow falling in...

Rental property wasn't really in Ryan and Melissa Garrett's plans. They had just purchased a home in Wahkiakum County, where they both grew up and went to school and were now raising their kids, with the intention of flipping it. What they didn't see coming was the torrent of response from people who were looking for a home to rent. "We hadn't advertised that we had purchased it," Ryan Garrett said, "but for that many people to contact us in need of a rental, it really got us thinking about how...
On Tuesday, the Cathlamet Town Council declined to pass a motion to "approve The Spar restaurant's right-of-way permit subject to agreed upon terms" in a 3 to 1 vote, which gives outdoor dining on Main Street a bleak future. In the same council meeting, the first reading of an amended fire code ordinance was passed which would allow River Mile 38 Brewing Co. to expand its operation at the marina without needing sprinkler systems. Other items discussed include an update on the covid-19 sewer test...

Cowlitz County is reporting a total of 3,308 cases, with 328 considered active, and 32 deaths. Across the river, Columbia County has had...
To The Eagle: I emailed to The Longview Daily News to cancel my subscription. They replied back with the cancellation notice signed by a person with its “business card,” a circulation rep from the Mid-Valley Media Group, the Democrat Herald/Gazette-Times/Lebanon Express. No wonder, it’s a democrat newspaper and would only praise themselves but criticize the republicans, conservatives, independents and patriots with propaganda and bias. President Trump promised an orderly transition on Jan. 20. He stated: “Even though I totally disagree with th...
NICE START--As this week begins, it's actually a pretty decent day after a somewhat cloudy and dampish beginning but the sun popped out this Sunday and gave us a very nice break. Last week, I turned in my column prior to all wind and rain that crashed down upon us and boy, it was really something! From mudslides to high water closing multiple roadways, it was quite the sight. Once again, we got a chance to see how prepared we were as some couldn't leave their houses until the waters receded and others found themselves "trapped" in places they d...

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: January 11 — 8:39 a.m. A Cathlamet resident said that she had been informed that someone had her social security number, an old address, and license and was trying to get a Target credit card in her name. She had contacted the bank and wanted to file a police report. 12:55 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious vehicle with two occupants parked on a Grays River road. 1:50 p.m. A caller witnessed a man on East Bir...

Some local citizens who are concerned about abused, neglected, abandoned, and stray animals formed the Wahkiakum Animal Advocates Group (WAAG) in 2019. The pandemic slowed their plans a bit, but they have continued to move forward, getting their 501c3 status, setting up a bank account, talking with local leaders via Zoom, and even performing a trap, neuter, and release operation for a feral cat colony in the Elochoman Valley in recent months. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last yea...
Freddie Lee Cothren July 10, 1932- Jan 14, 2021 Freddie Lee Cothren entered this world on July 10, 1932 as Freddie Lee Rowland, the daughter of Vierce and Dollie Rowland. Freddie and her five siblings enjoyed a hardworking, loving and adventure filled childhood in the hills of Hayesville, North Carolina until Loman Cothren came along and swept her off her feet. Freddie and Loman married on March 13, 1950 in Hiawassee, GA and started their migration west. First to South Dakota and then finally se...
Wahkiakum County commissioners on Tuesday by consensus declined to become partners in a project to create a public wifi system through the town of Cathlamet. The Town of Cathlamet, Port District 1, Wahkiakum PUD and other parties have been working on the plan, and last fall, the county commission agreed to participate in funding, allocating the use of $12,406 in CARES Act funds to pay for all the hardware needed to make the project happen. However, the board declined a request to join the town, port district and PUD in a governing board with...
Wahkiakum County commissioners dealt with the impacts January's heavy rain when they met Tuesday. The board voted to declare a state of emergency to allow fast track repair of a failing culvert on Salmon Creek Road. Public Works Director Chuck Beyer reported that a culvert, 24-30" in size, was partially gone, taking away one lane of the road. The department is working with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on emergency permitting to allow the replacement; the new culvert will have to be 6-8' in diameter, Beyer said. The emergency...
To The Eagle: For years I purchased my prescription drugs from our Cathlamet pharmacy, obviously a local business. When I went to fill a prescription last week, the pharmacist warned me that our Cathlamet pharmacy was no longer considered eligible for the coupon that reduced drug prices and that my prescription was now approximately 10 times more than before. Apparently, our pharmacy does not bring in enough money for “corporate” and is considered “too small and insignificant” for a courtesy that it continues to extend to vendors like WalMart...
