When you love learning as much as Nalani Schultz does, picking a favorite teacher can be hard to do. "I really did love all of my teachers, but I especially enjoyed talking about philosophy and politics with Mr. Cox because it's always exciting and stimulating," Nalani said. "Mr. Stetzer is really funny and unconventional, so that is always fun, and he's kind of awkward. It's hilarious. I really appreciate him because he told me that he saw me being a physics teacher in a brick building and now...

To The Eagle: The constant unceasing denigration of our country continues apace. The self-anointed holy among us decry our allegiance to basic American values. They want us to disarm and beg forgiveness from the hateful Left. We Americans are guilty of racism, sexism, and our syrupy America-First beliefs. Did you ever stop to think why so many people hate their own country and a good half of its people? The virtue-signaling gun control cries from a few of our locals and the publisher of this newspaper clearly shows their disregard for our...
HERE WE GO!--We're almost a week into another new month, and I have to tell you that I'm sure somebody has sped up the ole time machine, as these days are flying by! Our last weekend was mostly just cloudy on Saturday after rain on Friday night and Sunday was a bit cool and foggy in some areas in the early morning hours but it got nice and sunny and made for a great afternoon outside. I heard we may be in for a damp weekend, which is kind of the pits, but we really do need the rain. You really notice this if you're trying to just "pull" weeds,...

The Cathlamet Public (Blanche Bradley Memorial) Library has been closed to public entry since December 1, 2020 due to COVID-19. According to Librarian Carol Blix, patrons have been able to check out materials for curbside pickup, but not enter to browse for items on their own. People have been donating books to the library for the biannual book sales held by the Library Foundation in support of the library and its programs. The closure caused the cancellation of the 2020 sales so the books have been accumulating since the last sale in October o...

Alex Tantum knows there is a bigger world out there. He came to Cathlamet two or three years ago, when his stepfather found a job opportunity, but he was born in Florida, and lived in Tennessee and California before coming to the Pacific Northwest. "It's pretty good," he says. "It's really expensive to live in California." Living in different places is one kind of education, but Alex has discovered another way to travel and get to know people--foreign films. Foreign everything. He's hooked. So...
Navarre Stewart knows how to make the most of his spare time. He's creative, curious, and busy. If he isn't building models, which is usually, he's taking on some kind of creative writing project, which includes a novel he is working on right now. "The stories I want to tell are like those Star Wars space operas, but with more political grounding," Navarre said. It's clear he's learning a lot in Don Cox's American Government/Global Issues class, and is asking really important questions, which...

To The Eagle: Through the years, guns have been assembled in different ways for different purposes; some evil some good. Even though the 2nd Amendment was ratified in December 1791, there is nothing to add to it for gun control. The gun, whether it is laid upon the table by itself or in a drawer, does not kill. But when an individual picks up a gun, aims and pulls the trigger, that is the killer, not the gun. The killer is what needs control and he/she should be put into prison. For how long in prison depends on whether that individual killed...
GRAY BEGINNING--It's a gray and drippy Monday morning to start the week and it looks like we will be fairly cloudy with a couple more drizzly days in the week ahead. However, if the forecast proves true, we will see temps in the 70's on Thursday, only to return to rain on Friday and Sunday. If it does turn sunny and nice, be sure to get out there and take advantage of it as it may not last too long. There is always the hope that the forecast changes, as there's nothing more fickle than the weather around our area! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebratin...

Colton Bachman moved from Astoria to Wahkiakum County when he was six or seven, and so he has shared the classroom with some of the same people for most of his life. "It's nice," Colton said. "It's not like a big school, you know everybody. You're pretty much friends with a lot of people." During high school, he preferred to spend his time in the Vocational/Agriculture classroom with Kyle Hurley. "I like Mr. Hurley," Colton said. "I like his classes and he's pretty funny." Colton really likes...
You might say that Zachary Brandon made his way to Cathlamet via an all terrain vehicle. It was while enjoying that particular sport that he first met and became good friends with Aaron Mahitka, who also attends Wahkiakum High School. Originally from Astoria, Zachary is living with the Mahitka family and is pleased to be in Cathlamet. "I love it a lot more than Astoria," he said. "The community is great. Everyone is nice." His favorite teacher, Kyle Hurley, is a sometime employer. "He helped me...
Wahkiakum County's number of cases inched up by two cases to 108 this week as cases mounted in nearby counties. In a Monday morning briefing, Chris Bischoff, director of Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services, said one of the new cases was actually a Castle Rock resident, but the state Department of Health is attributing it to Wahkiakum County because of a mistaken address. "We can't get it corrected," Bischoff said. Four of the 108 cases are considered potentially active. Cowlitz County's...
