  • Early gillnet boat makes marina visit

    Rick Nelson|Aug 27, 2020

Long Beach resident Kent Craford came with friends and family to the Elochoman Slough Marina last Saturday to launch his gillnet boat, the John M. The 22-foot double ender boat reflects the transition between sail power and gasoline engine power in the early 20th century. The boat was once owned by Cathlamet residents Steve and Sharon Hart; they sold it to Craford in the mid-1990s, and he began a restoration process. Steve Hart said the boat was built in 1907 by Oregon boat builder Tim Driscoll...

  • Food programs addressing needs in Wahkiakum

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 20, 2020

If anyone in Wahkiakum County is struggling to put food on the table, it just doesn't have to be that way. There are a lot of resources available and a network of willing volunteers who want to ensure no one is going hungry in the community while the byproducts of a covid-19 pandemic wreak havoc on people's income, savings, and more. Cecile Bamer is a relative newcomer to the community. She was looking for connection, and something to do, when she got involved with a group that may have started...

  • Writer shares some thoughts

    Aug 20, 2020

To The Eagle: Come on now, did a writer last week really say "Workers of the World Unite?" I thought that Communist rallying cry died with Marx and Lenin but it lives somewhere on Puget Island. That is unbelievable after anyone with half a brain can see all the horrors of Communism. One letter seemed to defend Black Lives Matter and Antifa by trying to debunk the fact that they may have burned Bibles in Portland, Oregon. Well here is a news flash: When you riot, burn buildings, loot businesses and hurt others you don't need to burn the Bible,...

  • People need to remove their blinders

    Aug 20, 2020

To The Eagle: The image of rioters stomping the head of an unfortunate motorist in Portland this weekend was both horrifying and disgusting. The amount of hate and depravity it takes for persons to perpetrate that kind of violence on a complete stranger is unnerving. BTW, how many of you saw this footage or any of the 80+ nights of violence in Portland? No? Or how about what’s going on every night just up the I-5 corridor in Seattle, where BLM rioters are going into residential neighborhoods chanting, “Give up your homes, this is our neighborho...

  • Think for yourself

    Aug 20, 2020

To The Eagle: As the November election approaches I would like to encourage everyone, regardless of political affiliation, personal likes and dislikes, race, creed, color, religion, education or upbringing to consider the actual issues facing this country. And not be swayed by all the bad news and noise being sprayed around. Also consider the voting records and actions in the past of the various candidates. Is the person qualified to be in a leadership role for this country? Have the courage to confront the actual situations this country is fac...

  • We must stop the slowdown of our mail

    Aug 20, 2020

To The Eagle: With the recent announced slowdown of the U.S. mail, impacting the speed of the bills you mail out, the checks you receive in the mail and the prescriptions you receive by mail, it’s time to express your concern to your local Congresswoman. Yes, it’s a pain to actually participate in government and contact someone who represents you. But it beats rolling over and taking this silently. What does the future hold? Following the slowdown of the mail, the closure of beloved rural post offices probably isn’t far behind. Contact Jamie...

  • FOS still accepting donations for auction

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 20, 2020

HOT, HOT, HOT!--Last weekend started out on a very toasty note, as temperatures were in the upper 90s at this house and even the "cool" side of the house registered 95, which is not exactly my idea of a cool day! With the traffic going non-stop in the westerly direction, I am guessing it was wall to wall down there! I know one person who touted it being only 73 degrees where he was, so yes, that's about perfect temperatures to enjoy the outdoors to me. Thankfully there was a smidgen of rain Sunday night and temps were in the 80s on Monday so I...

  • Poet, photographer cover the lower river

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 20, 2020

I don't usually stick my neck out and do reviews, but this time I will. I quite like The Tidewater Reach: Field Guide to the Lower Columbia River in Poems and Pictures, a collaboration between Robert Michael Pyle, poet, and Judy VanderMaten, photographer, both of Wahkiakum County. The color edition is even lovelier, if only to appreciate that VanderMaten's work isn't just about form, but about hue. VanderMaten moved to the area in 1987, and has long been taking pictures of the natural world,...

  • Primary election

    Rick Nelson|Aug 13, 2020

Updated vote tallies late last week for Washington's primary elections produced no changes in results for local, regional or state wide races. In primary elections, the candidates with the top two vote counts advance to the general election. Also, in races for seats on a county commission, only voters in the commissioner district vote for the candidates, with all voters in a county voting on the races in the general election. Wahkiakum County had two races on the ballot, both for county commissioner, and both with only two candidates. In...

  • Please make sure your pet is ID'd

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 13, 2020

NICE ONE--We certainly had a nice weekend with a bit of heat thrown in there for you sun lovers, so I'm sure you all enjoyed it. The late night hours cooled things off a bit and the early morning hours weren't bad either, so for folks like me who don't like to work in the sun, those times really provided a great opportunity to do any outside chores that needed to be done. Of course, by the traffic I saw and heard going by, I know there were a lot of folks saying "forget the yardwork" and away they went to the coastal areas to enjoy a wonderful...
