  • PUD addresses Westend water comments; progress on broadband

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 9, 2020

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday to talk about broadband infrastructure, financial consolidation, recent letters in the local newspaper, and to pass a resolution that provides information on assistance to ratepayers. Commissioner Dennis Reid responded to recent letters to the editor in The Wahkiakum County Eagle regarding the Skamokawa Water Consolidation project. “These two letters, they were both upset that we were doing Skamokawa and not Deep River,” Reid sai...

  • Thanks to Town of Cathlamet

    Jul 9, 2020

To The Eagle: My thanks to the Town of Cathlamet for spending the extra dollars to use skid-proof paint when they refurbished the wooden footbridge to the marina area. The slippery surface has been a problem, even with posted warnings- now much safer for all our residents. Tom Roberts Cathlamet...

  • Legislators used media to plant fear

    Jul 9, 2020

To The Eagle: The legislators did a good job using the media to spread the fear of covid to us. They mandated a law that we must wear a face mask; else we be slapped with jail time and a fine if we don’t. I’m no doctor but common sense tells us it’s not healthy to wear a mask, especially for long hours. We need oxygen to breathe in and breathe out to rid us of the carbon dioxide. No government has the right to order you to do something that violates your freedom of choice, especially when it involves your body. It wouldn’t be surpris...

  • It should become more interesting

    Jul 9, 2020

To The Eagle: Well, we're finally number one! After extremely useless and questionable leadership, our country has achieved the dubious honor of having more Covid-19 cases than every other country in the world. The United States has between 4 percent and 5 percent of the planet’s population and 25 percent of the total infections! Making America first has finally come to pass. I seem to remember a 2016 campaign promise that we would be winning so much that we'd be tired of winning. Seems to be the one and possibly only thing that was true. M...

  • Who's fanning the flames over racism?

    Jul 9, 2020

To The Eagle: Thank you, J.B. Bouchard, for the education on white privilege. I didn't have a clue. I had been going down to Jim Crow Creek for 30 years without a racist thought until someone in Olympia educated me that it's racist. No, sir, I have not experienced any of the scenarios that you mentioned, but I have been in Atlanta where I was treated like a second class citizen . . . I've been in some pretty bad neighborhoods where I felt very uncomfortable for being white. If I only knew about my white privilege then. I do feel privileged,...

  • Sheriff's Report, July 9, 2020

    Jul 9, 2020

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: June 28 — 3:13 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported that a former girlfriend and her boyfriend were having sex in his back yard and would not leave. The caller said it was a recurring issue. Two deputies responded and found no evidence that anyone had been there recently. A deputy went to the other man’s home; his vehicle’s engine was cold. • Coming Events: Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jul 9, 2020

Have you read any good books lately? I have been trying to read more as a personal goal, but mostly to try and break up my slight attachment to technology. I’d like to hear what books you are reading- or what ways you tune out the technology. I like to have a few books going at the same time so I can make them last longer. I’ve been enjoying reading Irene Martin’s book Beach of Heaven, which is a fascinating read about the history of Wahkiakum county. Timothy Egans’ book Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher is about the epic life and immorta...

  • Insurance agency passes to new hands

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 9, 2020

By Diana Zimmerman James Sorensen officially took over the Farmers Insurance office in Cathlamet on July 1 following Linda Barth's retirement. Sorensen is from Vancouver but is making his home in Cathlamet. He has been working for Farmers Insurance for the past two years, in their protegé program. "The goal for that entire process is to do the things that an agent does during that term," Sorensen said. "The first year I was a producer, and then the second year I was in the protegé program. Y...

  • Celebrate safely on this Fouth of July

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 2, 2020

MIXED WEATHER--This past weekend started a bit drippy for many of us and the "brief shower" listed on our weather apps lasted much longer for some of us, as often times we find that West Valley is "very special,"as in, "always different" than most, so we don't count on those apps to correctly forecast our weather! I hope the upcoming forecast is nicer though, as it may wind up that the weather will be wetter during the week but mostly sunny for the weekend, which I'm sure would be very well received for those with big BBQ or travel plans....

  • Cathlamet man makes New Zealand trek

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 2, 2020

(Editor's note: This completes the story about Paul Tillman's hike last year that took him the length of New Zealand.) Cathlamet resident Paul Tillman is back at his post at the Cathlamet Market and as a volunteer with the Cathlamet Fire Department but if you are like me and noticed his absence, he's been on a bit of an amble. Last fall, he headed home to his native Minnesota to spend a week with his family before stepping on a plane to New Zealand to complete his third through hike. The hike,...

  • Board needs Westend voices to be heard

    Jul 2, 2020

To The Eagle: I have served on many boards and committees but I can say the County Planning Commission has been one of the best I have ever been a member of. So when I read that two of the commissioners resigned last week I was really sad, but not surprised because I too, was also very unhappy with how things went at our last meeting. There need to be changes and I will work with my fellow commissioners to discuss and make needed changes to bring order to how we do business in the future. I was one the commissioners that voted no on the PUD's...

    Bill Tawater|Jul 2, 2020

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wahkiakum Post 5297, operates in Cathlamet. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cathlamet Fire Hall, although our last 3 meetings were conducted by telephone conference call. Currently, there are 62 members in the Post. We have about 188 veterans listed in Wahkiakum County. We believe there are many more veterans living within Wahkiakum County, but have not contacted us, and we would like to hear from you. As with most organizations, we have a hierarchy structure. We belong to District 16,...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jul 2, 2020

Health and wellness certainly have taken on a new shape and form in the past three months, eh? I’ve taken a lot of interest in noticing the daily reminders of how adaptable people truly are. When I take my son to daycare and I see all those little ones wearing masks, its very surreal. The women who run SJFC have done an incredible job at adapting and evolving with the care they provide. Knowing that the kids of today will tell their grandchildren about the Corona Virus pandemic back in 2020, is like something out of a movie. I know masks a...

  • Summer reading program theme announced: Imagine Your Story

    Jul 2, 2020

Readers ages 5-15 will explore all things imaginary (including fairytale and fantasy) this summer as Cathlamet Public Library presents “Imagine Your Story” during their reimagined summer library program. Due to COVID-19 issues limiting the number of people in the library at one time, there will be no in-person storytimes and activities this year. Parents are asked to attend their young child at all times while looking for library materials to check out. Older children may enter as individuals or in pairs. Imagine Your Story program bags are ava...

  • Health director ready to apply for Phase 4 as soon as state will allow

    Rick Nelson|Jun 25, 2020

As the covid-19 pandemic evolves around Washington, Wahkiakum County officials are looking to advance to a Phase 4 opening as soon as possible. "I'm ready (to apply) if the state will allow it," county Health and Human Services (H&HS) Director Chris Bischoff told the county board of commissioners on Tuesday. "My feeling is that as long as the trend is upward, they won't allow anybody to go to Phase 4," he said. "That's the problem with Phase 4," commented Commissioner Gene Strong. "People will come in from other areas. The more you open things...

  • Cathlamet man makes New Zealand trek

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 25, 2020

Cathlamet resident Paul Tillman is back at his post at the Cathlamet Market and as a volunteer with the Cathlamet Fire Department, but if you are like me and noticed his absence, he's been on a bit of an amble. Last fall, he headed home to his native Minnesota to spend a week with his family before stepping on a plane to New Zealand to complete his third through hike. "It was actually kind of nice," Tillman said. "It was our fall, but since I went to the southern hemisphere, it was their...

  • Will fear of the virus bankrupt our lives?

    Jun 25, 2020

To The Eagle: About Covid-19, in the USA; with the population of an estimated 330 million; over 2 million got the virus; 118 thousand died and over 873 thousand recovered. The numbers of our loved ones that died are not comforting; this shouldn’t be happening but it did. For coronavirus update, go to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries. We still have much to learn about the virus but those with a high and mighty attitude telling us to get over it and wear the mask out of protection and respect for others does not swallow w...

  • More businesses set to open locally

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 25, 2020

ANOTHER MIXED WEEKEND--There's nothing like being in the 80s one minute, and within an hour, in the 60s, followed by rain the next day, only to be followed by sunshine; what a way to end spring and start summer. With a little luck, the forecast of decent weather all week will come true, but as we all know, that can change in a heartbeat, so if you're planning a special event, always have those alternative indoor plans on the back burner, or you might be attending that outdoor BBQ in your boots, wearing a rain coat and packing an umbrella!...

  • Amateur Radio Field Day 2020 set for this weekend

    Jun 25, 2020

Amateur Radio Field Day is upon us again. It comes up every year on the fourth full weekend of June, when amateur radio operators test their emergency skills to make contact with as many other operators around the world as they can. Last year the Wahkiakum Club (N7WAH) set up several stations at the high school ballfields and placed 4th nationally in the low power battery category. This year, due to the covid-19 pandemic, they are operating as an outstation club. Thus, they will be scattered...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jun 25, 2020

The volunteers of the Summer Lunch program have completely blown me away. The outpour of folks willing to roll up their sleeves and make lunches for our kids is really something special. Our first week went great, and our numbers of meals are increasing. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this program, whether you donated money, helped secure emergency funds, donated food, donated time, organized, sanitized, made masks, or are physically making the food. Without this level of teamwork and civic service this could not be accomplished....

  • Council declines to open swimming pool for 2020

    Rick Nelson|Jun 18, 2020

By a 4-1 vote, the Cathlamet Town Council decided Monday not to open the municipal swimming pool this summer. The council cited a mix of concerns over the covid-19 pandemic and financial and operating costs in making the decision. The decision upholds a consensus the council reached at their June 1 meeting. However Council Member David Olson subsequently asked that the council discuss the issue and vote on it at this week's meeting. Olson said he had learned the town had a pool advisory...
