The Cathlamet Town Council covered a lot of ground at their regular monthly meeting on Monday. The meeting was the last for Council Member Sue Cameron who is moving to Clark County. Sheriff Mark Howie reported officers are close to making arrests in a burglary last week of the Skamokawa Resort. The business had security cameras which captured images of the perpetrators, and Howie recommended all businesses install the cameras. Overall, crime is down in the county, Howie said. His department is now fully staffed, he said, adding that he has...
Community activists have begun surveying Wahkiakum County residents about their likes and dislikes for potential parks and recreation facilities. Following up, WRAP members learned that there is significant state grant funding for parks and recreation f...

Several other volunteers work behind the scenes of this yearly event, created by the late Bud Mickelsen as a thank you to men...
LITTLE DAMP--As this work week begins, we are just a little damp in West Valley, which makes for a gloomy start to the day, but on the other hand, moisture for our parched lawn is deeply appreciated, and it settles the dust as well. However, it wasn't too long before we had sunshine again, so we didn't get a lot of moisture, just enough to make it muggy when the sun came out! From what I hear, the real rain was to hit on Wednesday and may even be a bit damp on Thursday but then it's supposed to dry up and warm up, so let's hope those with weeke...

Through the Fog of Time Part I Imagine yourself driving east on State Route 4, and as you cross the Grays River bridge just east of Shannon Road, when a sudden fog immerses the car and the car comes to a halt. You get out of the car and notice the fog beginning to clear just west of Fossil Creek Road on the west side of the KM Mountain. Instead of seeing the highway, you see the Saldern Logging camp busy as ever on the south side of where the highway was. You realize you have gone back to the...

By Diana Zimmerman Thanks to some local officials, we now have two air quality monitors in Wahkiakum County. It all started with a conversation at a Community Health Alliance Advisory Committee meeting after the fires in the county earlier this year, according to Wahkiakum Health and Human Services Deputy Director Dean Counts. Someone mentioned that the air quality was fine in Longview but terrible here. The air quality monitor located in Longview wasn’t telling Wahkiakum County residents w...
To The Eagle: Last Tuesday, August 6, the Puget Island Fire Department hosted its 3rd annual "National Night Out" event at the fire hall. We had a large number of friends and neighbors stop in to say hello and enjoy hot dogs and root beer floats, making it a tremendously successful event. It was a fun evening for all involved and a pleasure meeting and visiting with people from our community. We would like to thank two of our local businesses, River Mile 38 for the root beer donation and the Cathlamet Market for donating the ice cream, along...
To The Eagle: In April we got a substantial job that required adding 6000 s.f. to our existing facility. We got the building permit in less than 48 hours. Construction was finished and we moved in in 60 days. This morning I went in to the county health department to ask some questions about a septic system we had installed maybe 20 years ago. I walked away with my answer and a look at the original permit in about two minutes. This is the greatest county to live in the entire State of Washington. Thank you, Wahkiakum County employees! Robert L....
To The Eagle: We want to recognize and publicly acknowledge the good folks at Norse Hall and everyone involved for the fantastic support that made our May wedding an event to remember. The board and volunteers at the Sons of Norway pulled out all the stops to make our event a successful one. We are so grateful and we heartily recommend Norse Hall for any and all events in the county, with or without the Viking ship! Words can never express how thankful we are to the good folks at the Sons of Norway and all concerned. David and Dayle Olson...
WETNESS--As this week begins, we are seeing some dampness in West Valley, which is one of those "good/bad" things, depending on what you had planned. For many, the rain means an automatic watering of our lawns and flowers without doing it by hand, and the fact that our forests and surrounding areas got a drink and may have helped with the fire danger, well, that's always appreciated. If you had an outdoor event planned, it probably wasn't too welcomed and if you were still dealing with putting in your hay, well, the rain was truly not welcomed...

Whether you grew up here or you transplanted, there is something very connecting about the folks who hold space in this beautiful nook of the planet. Wahkiakum is a culmination of beauty, history and grit. We take care of each other out here. The natural allure of the waters and the hills is breathtaking, but what makes it unique are its people. A vein of ‘salt of the earth’ people with varied experiences, passions and backgrounds flow here. In this way, our county is so rich. “A nice family in town gave me a room to live in for two month...
