  • Wahkiakum PUD ready for summer projects

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 18, 2020

The Wahkiakum PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports and approved an interlocal agreement to perform water testing at County Line Park for Port 1 on Tuesday morning. Commissioner Dennis Reid asked General Manger Dave Tramblie if there were any plans to reopen the PUD offices to the public. “I am following the lead of the rest of the utilities in the state,” Tramblie said. “Nobody is anxious to reopen yet. Everything is functioning fine.” During his report, Tramblie said that an enginee...

  • Open minds, open hearts needed now

    Rick Nelson|Jun 18, 2020
    1

Last week, word traveled by social media that people supporting the Black Lives Matter would hold "A March of Silence" on Friday afternoon, state wide. According to news reports, the event's purpose was to honor those lost to police brutality and institutionalized racism, with the silent part also to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. I and members of my staff were pleased to learn a group of Wahkiakum County citizens would join the statewide event. They gathered in front of the community center in Cathlamet, held signs and waved at...

  • The facts are available, no need to debate

    Jun 18, 2020

To The Eagle: Writing strictly as a Cathlamet resident and independent voter, I felt it necessary to comment on the article in the June 4 Eagle labeled Life under Attack. The writer made many statements I do wholeheartedly agree with. I do find though that he succumbs to using the same vitriol regarding the Democratic party that many other embarrassed and desperate GOP supporters increasingly have to resort to. In particular, it’s ironic he infers Democrats are the party of “handouts.” It’s hard to square that circle after after a $22 billion...

  • We need to vote the left out

    Jun 18, 2020

To The Eagle: And now we are forced to witness another massive hysteria brought to us by our leftist media. The awful and destructive riots are meant to demoralize and terrorize our people. How they love to bring their lying and dispiriting ‘news’ to their audience. How they take pleasure in spewing their nasty and grim predictions of doom. Their non-stop contempt for their own country and traditions seems almost overwhelming to us who would be free of them. For those who live in the metropolises, it is getting to be unbearable. I ask what pol...

  • MLK not BLM

    Jun 18, 2020

To The Eagle: Please read the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, the answer to repair what divides the races is there in that brilliant caring man’s words. The Black Lives Matter movement lost much support when they accused anyone that said All Lives Matter is a racist and joined hands with ANTIFA Anarchists. BLM became irrelevant when the movement bonded with ANTIFA and other hate groups that never cared about lifting poor Black people out of poverty or seeing innocent Black children being denied the promise of America because they are forced t...

  • Treat the man in your family this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 18, 2020

PRETTY WET--This past weekend it was pretty wet, like inches of wetness, at least out here in West Valley. The greenery even got so heavy, that a couple of trees came down and one of them took out our power! Thank goodness we saw a bit more sunshine and dry weather on Sunday, which was Flag Day, and I'm told we'll have a few really nice days by the end of the week and maybe even half of the weekend, so let's hope we can all sneak in a BBQ while it's dry. However, with the weather being so unpredictable around here, I'm going to believe it when...

The caller was able to get the cows back into a field and put up the fence, but he said it was going to fall over again. The owner was contacted and he planned to fix the fence. 2:44 p.m. A sexual assault was r...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jun 18, 2020

There is a lot happening right now, in the world, in our hearts and in our lives. I am certainly not a fortune teller, but I do have a sneaking suspicion that all this change is not only necessary, but also healthy. Some days it doesn’t seem that way, the heaviness of it all can be exhausting. However, as we move forward as a community, I’m watching a lot of people really step into their power and it’s a beautiful thing. OK folks, its official- Summer Lunch has begun! Not only do we have lunch, but we also have breakfast, GAP bags and garde...

  • Student weighs in on possible pool closure

    Jun 11, 2020

Student weighs in on possible pool closure To The Eagle: My name is Luke Bohn and I will be a senior at Wahkiakum High School next fall. I moved here from Portland, Oregon just last summer. I worked at the pool last year and it’s one of the most valuable experiences I’ve had here. I know it’s a difficult decision, but it would be very helpful to ask the right people. I’m glad the pool has another chance, but let me tell you why this shouldn’t even be a big discussion. The town council looked at the financial side of the situation, and I can...

  • Council Corner

    Jun 11, 2020

For those interested in what your Cathlamet Town Council has been working on, in no particular order, here’s what’s been keeping us all busy: - securing overhead street banners promoting Cathlamet’s history and culture. - working in conjunction with Oregon and Washington state officials for both signage from Oregon to Cathlamet, and improved safety turning lanes for using the Puget Island Ferry. - securing grant funding to help pay for planned charging stations on the Butler Street property on Main St. - signing a 16-year lease with the Cemet...

  • Let's be considerate of each other

    Jun 11, 2020

To The Eagle: Most businesses I have frequented usually have signs posted announcing either “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” or “We reserve the right to deny service to anyone.” Business owners have the right, within the limits of anti-discrimination laws, to deny service to the shoeless for sanitary reasons, I suppose, and troublesome customers for reasons of safety, one presumes. It is my opinion that certain businesses in Cathlamet whose physical layouts make social distancing difficult, need to post another notice, in the interest of public...

  • All lives matter

    Jun 11, 2020
    1

To The Eagle: I believe in my heart and soul that all lives matter. If that makes me a racist to some morons I couldn't care less. I remember many years ago walking a peaceful protest line outside of a Woolworth Store in New York City because the store served Black customers at the lunch counter on paper plates and Whites on regular dishes. That was despicable in my eyes and I did my part to stop it. These days that kind of disgraceful action would not be tolerated by anyone of any color, my point being that there has been change for the...

  • Citizens urged to attend city hall meeting

    Jun 11, 2020

To The Eagle: Summer is rapidly approaching and the Town of Cathlamet has some difficult decisions to make regarding the swimming pool. In an area with multiple waterways it is vital, and in fact lifesaving, that children learn to swim and learn water safety. Prior to the opening of the pool, drownings of children were not uncommon in this county. However we are still dealing with a pandemic and the safety restrictions necessary to prevent further outbreaks. The pool advisory committee would like to see the pool open, even if only for...

  • Kayakers and Duck Inn to open soon

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 11, 2020

WET AND WILD--Once again, this past week has been a mix of weather, and depending on where you were, you were either mowing the lawn or you were pulling out the umbrellas and putting on your boots! While I was actually enjoying some sunshine after a light morning shower, a friend of mine a little further east said it was pouring down rain for a bit, which was then accompanied by an extremely heavy burst of hail, so I guess if you didn't like the weather, you just needed to drive a few miles in another direction, and you'd find yourself in...

  • Sheriff's Report, June 11, 2020

    Jun 11, 2020

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: May 31 — 1:21 p.m. Dispatch received a 911 call and could hear loud noises, but no audible voices. The call was determined to be coming from a point on the Columbia River Highway in Oregon. Oregon State Patrol was notified. 1:42 p.m. A caller reported a column of smoke and a smell of garbage coming from a Puget Island address. A deputy and the Puget Island Fire Department responded to what turned out to be a...

  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jun 11, 2020

The bookdrop is currently open to receive returned materials. Be sure to check the library's website , Facebook page, or call 360-795-3254 for further infor...

  • Local dining establishments find their way to serve customers

    Darrell Alexander|Jun 11, 2020

Story and photos by Darrell Alexander The Covid19 virus has curtailed many people from traveling through the county. Since Phase II has begun, the governor has lifted the restrictions on restaurants in the state. Those that have reopened are using only 50 percent seating capacity in order to comply with the governor's suggested guidelines for social distancing. They are also in compliance with the Atlanta based Center for Disease Control's (CDC) suggested guidelines for social distancing. This i...

Some guideline details remain to be worked out, sad Chris Bischoff, county Director of Health and Human Services. Following is the text from John Wiesman, state secretary of health: June 5, 2020 Chris Bischoff, Director Wahkiakum Health and Human Services 64 Main Street Cathlamet, Washington 989612 Dear Director Bischoff: I am in receipt of the Wahkiakum County’s COVID-19 application requesting approval to fully i...

  • Cathlamet pool: Council to vote on opening for 2020 season

    Rick Nelson|Jun 4, 2020

Town of Cathlamet officials have backed away from a Monday evening announcement that the town swimming pool wouldn't open for the 2020 season. Instead, the council is seeking public opinion about opening the pool or keeping it closed for the summer, and the council will vote on the issue at their June 15 meeting. On Monday night, Mayor Dale Jacobson announced that the pool wouldn't open this season. He said he had discussed the issue with Clerk/Treasurer Sarah Clark, and given the uncertainty and requirements of dealing with the covid-19...

  • Town council considers comp plan extension, change order protocol

    Rick Nelson|Jun 4, 2020

Members of the Cathlamet Town Council acted on an update of the town's comprehensive plan and debated change order procedures and how to allocate CARES Act funds when they met Monday. The council voted 3-2 to extend their contract with the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Council of Governments (COG) for plan development by $4,500 for a total of $13,500. COG Executive Director Bill Fashing said the initial contract envisioned a quick, uncomplicated update, but there had been lots of input from council members,...

  • No leadership coming from the top

    Jun 4, 2020

To The Eagle: Not sure if I'm glad I'm a white man or embarrassed to wake up still white after all these years. Watching what appeared to be a bored white police officer murder a black man, handcuffed and pleading for his life, is just too much. There were several other officers just standing around to prevent the reasonably concerned citizens from stopping the killing is equally maddening. And then we're supposed to wonder why the black folks riot? Are you kidding me? This has been going on for nearly ever in this country. Being choked to...

  • Public input sought about opening pool

    Jun 4, 2020

To The Eagle: We are saddened to announce that the Cathlamet swimming pool may not be opening this summer due to COVID-19 implications. After much consideration and impact analysis, the town council unanimously determined that pool operations do not appear to be viable this season. Aside from the financial impact, social distancing requirements would greatly restrict occupancy levels and place too many limitations on swimmers. The council is however seeking written public comment which will be read aloud and taken into consideration at the...
