Firewatch: Towers in the National Forests used to be common years ago. College students would stay at a tower for the summer to watch for smoke indicating a fire. They would contact the agency so fire crews could get to the fire ASAP. Can we all be like those firewatchers? That heat we had will hopefully not come again. Yesterday's breeze from the ocean was heaven. That heat burned the new growth on a couple of my rhododendrons. Two more cases of covid-19 were reported by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in the county to 157. Of those, 23 are considered potentially active. The two are in self-quarantine and have no known connection to either Wahkiakum School District or St. James Family Center. Greetings from the fair office. Fair Books should be out soon. The fair royalty will be kicking off soon and they will be out selling Fair Passes and Raffle tickets. It’s hot. That means my grass is “browning” and watering flowers is my focus. My pink rose is wandering all over the place and blooming. So stunning. The Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board met Tuesday. In personnel matters, the board acknowledged the resignations of teachers Brian Macy, Wendy Macy, and Kathryn Green. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation will host The Challenge of Champions Pro Bull Riding Tour for the fourth year on Friday, July 16. The event takes place at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The gates open at 4:30 and the bull riding starts at 7 p.m. There will be food for sale on the grounds. This is a family friendly event; children five and under attend for free. Shelby McEneny grew up at the fish hatchery in Grays River. While her brother attended school in Naselle, she traveled over KM every day with her mom to go to school in Cathlamet. Fundraising Report for Doug Sandell: I just had a call from Buddy Strange to let us all know the total raised last weekend to help Doug Sandell's health expenses was over $27,000! Maria Loviisa (Nis-kanen) Wirkkala was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Surrounded by her family, she went to meet her Heavenly Father on June 3, 2021 at the age of 78. She was born to Emil and Ida Niskanen in Pielavesi, Finland on February 14, 1943. Maria lived in Finland and worked as an LPN until the age of 23 when she came to the United States.
