Wahkiakum County Noxious Weed Control Board|Jul 31, 2025

Got weeds? This time of year, Wahkiakum County has plenty. So what do you do with them? This week we will give you some ideas on disposal methods for noxious weed material. Disposal of noxious weed material can vary depending on the plant species, growth stage of the plant and quantity of plant material. General techniques: if plants are flowering, cut and bag flowers, when possible, to prevent seed development and dispersal. Seal bags and put them in the trash. If they have been treated with...

JUST RIGHT. I have to say, concerning the recent weather, the last few days have been just perfect for me: cloudy in the morning hours, then sunshine later on. No crazy hot temps, and cooler temps in the evening, so my house doesn't heat up too much either; I have really enjoyed it. Now, I did hear that there were some showers in Cathlamet, but surprisingly, we didn't get them, which was amazing as we folks in Skamokawa are usually the ones who get the most rain! Actually, we could use some rain, so if it shows up, I will be quite happy. By...

    Dan Turner|Jul 31, 2025

I recently interviewed Mary Hogue and Cathy Cruikshank for our 24th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. I met up with Mary and Cathy in Skamokawa at Viewpoint Landing (formerly Skamokawa Landing). Mary and her husband, Jarrod Hogue, own and manage Viewpoint Landing. When I first reached out to Mary for an interview, she kindly insisted that I interview both her and Cathy together. Who was I to argue? It was a wonderful interview. Thank yo...

  • Stalking Awareness Series: resources and getting help

    Nicole Jordan|Jul 31, 2025

For our final installment, we’re looking at support resources and tips and tools to help in the pursuit of justice against stalking perpetrators - be it individual, proxy-stalkers, or multi-perpetrator community-based stalking and harassment - all of which happen in Columbia County on a regular basis. Being informed and aware is a critical line of defense. Capturing and tracking evidence as it happens is one of the most important things you can do. Even if the detail seems “insignificant,” it’s crucial to document everything. Keep a Stalkin...

Solid waste disposal fees at the Columbia County Transfer Station increased by 2.2 percent effective July 1, 2025, following an annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) adjustment approved by the Columbia County Board of Commissioners. As required under Board Order 6-2010, disposal rates at the Transfer Station are updated each year based on the previous year’s CPI. The most recent CPI increase of 2.2 percent resulted in updated rates for residential and commercial customers. Some of the solid waste fees include commercial tipping fee ($112.36 per t...

  • The Eagle Outdoors

    M.D. Johnson|Jul 31, 2025

It's funny the things that make me smile. Just this morning, I'm sitting on the back porch, coffee in one hand, dog at my feet. I'm listening to the rooster down the valley greet the day and my girl-chickens waking up for another; when, from stage right, a tiny rufous hummingbird makes his jet-like appearance. As they often do, he makes the rounds of the many blossoms on the porch. A sip from the impatiens, a drink from the Albutilon, a split second to check out the early mums; the geraniums....

  • Westside Stories

    Lisa Yeager|Jul 31, 2025

Last week, I shared about our first summer cleaning up our property in Grays River. When we were planning our move, the question we heard most often was, "You know it rains a lot there, right?" Of course, we were aware of that. It's the Pacific Northwest; everyone knows it. However, knowing about it in theory and experiencing it firsthand are two entirely different things. In Sept. 2021, the rain began, and for months, it felt as though it would never stop. Locals even mentioned that this...

Councilmember Crystal Baker brought an item to the agenda during the Monday, July 21 session of Cathlamet Town Council. Having spoken with board members from the Wahkiakum County Historical Society, Crystal, the newest member of Town Council, inquired about the communication between council members and the Historical Society - specifically the museum - from early August to mid November. According to Crystal, a letter was sent on Aug. 5 requesting that Council "not touch" the tree at Strong Park. Much to the surprise of the Historical Society, t...

Plenty of action has taken place over the past couple of weeks to reflect the PUD consolidation. At the request of Mayor David Olson, PUD General Manager Dan Kay gave a report to begin Monday evening's session of Cathlamet Town Council. "The last two weeks have accelerated quite rapidly," said Kay to begin his report. "All is good, all is safe, everybody has water." Noting the PUD was "on site" at the water treatment plants, Kay reported "getting computer upgrades" and "needing to get more water in" to build the reservoirs. "Last week, the...

I recently interviewed Dayle Olson for our 23rd installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. Dayle is a poet and short fiction writer, and we met up at her home in Cathlamet and had a conversation about all things books and reading. As we began, Dayle shared her love of reading right from the start. "If there's a 12-month program for reading addiction, I should be going," she said with a laugh. • Gardening with Chip

    Chip Bubl|Jul 24, 2025

Planting over septic fields A review of articles about planting on a septic drain field offer a range of opinions about what, if anything, is suitable. The concerns seem to be focused on three areas: that compaction of the soil over the drain fields by gardening activities may lead to a reduced life for the septic drain field; that root encroachment into drain lines can lead to drain field failure; and the risk that septic effluent might contaminate fruits or vegetables grown over a septic field with human pathogens. A septic drain line is...

CLOUDY START. As this week begins, it’s a cooler and cloudier day and I’m just loving it. It’s the perfect kind of weather for doing yard work, so one doesn’t get too hot or sunburned, and it sure beats sweating half to death like we did last week when it was over 100 degrees here. That was miserable. If the forecast holds true, it appears to be in the 70-75 range, with a bit more sun and decent temperatures. In my opinion, that’s perfect. Hope you enjoy it! SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from July 24 through 3...
