Well, I'm back from northeast Ohio, and I must say it was a wonderful trip. The weather was perfect. The leaves were just beginning to turn. My folks are doing fine for folks who are 84 and 85. A glitch here and there - Mom's Parkinson's and Dad's COPD - but they're muddling through and doing well. I had a chance to share a meal with some high school buddies (class of 1982), met some new Newton Falls residents, played with a couple dozen dogs, generally sat for a spell, and relived the late 70s...
Plant garlic soon Plant garlic by Oct. 15 to avoid planting in very wet soil from fall rains. Unless your soil is very well drained, make a small, raised bed. Add some lime (three pounds for a 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed) and some organic or conventional “complete” fertilizer. Plant garlic cloves with the bottom of the clove about four inches deep into the bed. Rows can be spaced about 12 inches apart and the cloves about three to four inches apart in the row. The larger the clove you plant, the larger the bulb you will get next summer. Mulch t...

I recently reached my five-year mark as City Administrator here in Rainier. This milestone has given me the chance to reflect on everything that the City has accomplished in that time and a renewed sense of optimism about its overall direction moving forward. Not too long after I started this position, three long-time councilors moved out of the City around the same time. The councilors who replaced them were a combination of some who had previously served and others who added new experiences and perspectives to the body. Citizen participation...

Wahkiakum School District Superintendent Ralph Watkins spent the last 12 years in Alaska. With a couple of those years being spent in Shishmaref, a town Watkins described as a "poster child for climate change," the newly appointed superintendent learned a lot about community while living in these Alaskan villages. Wanting to not only work in communities of 2,000 people or less, as well as being closer to his aging mother and father in Los Angeles, Calif., Watkins, along with his wife and son,...
Protecting existing programs and restoring funding cuts that were made to help balance the state budget will be the focus of the Washington State Board of Education in the 2026 legislative session. “We’re looking at a framework that responds to the budget realities while also keeping student needs at the forefront,” Yazmin Carretero, the board’s government relations and policy analyst, told members in their August meeting. The legislative platform communicates the board’s top priorities to the Legislature and will guide the legislati...

A recent donation to St. James Family Center (SJFC) made quite a stir at the end of August. Beaverton-based Pacific Office Automation (POA) gave $1000 and eight NASCAR tickets as a contribution to St James' "40 for 40" campaign, which celebrates the 40 years SJFC has been a part of Wahkiakum County's landscape. The NASCAR tickets may seem a bit random; however, POA has a unique relationship with Portland International Raceway. POA is actually the title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Xfinity...
DAMP BEGINNING. Well, as this week begins, I know that many of you aren't too keen about the dampness falling from the sky but there are a whole lot of folks who are relishing in the cool down and the "sprinklers" from the sky. Our yards are pretty parched and our forests are tinder dry, besides, it's September and aren't we supposed to see a shift away from the hot days of summer? SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from Sept. 11 through Sept. 18 are Brittanie Helms-Lampitt, Rex Gilbertsen, Conner Parker, Renee Robert, C...
When Lyle Haataja sits down at his scroll saw, patience is just as important as precision. What began years ago as a curiosity, after a friend gave him a magazine full of scroll saw patterns, has grown into a craft that blends artistry, humor, and a touch of stubborn determination. Initially, it was just a hobby, but Lyle enjoyed the challenge of guiding the fine blade through delicate patterns. Over time, as his skill improved, so did his reputation. He started selling his pieces at local bazaa...

She has already recovered more than $9.6 milli...
For the love of...porches Porches come in all types; open air, screened in, wrap around, front, back, covered, multi-season, etc. Porches are what I'd been missing all along. They were right there in front of me, and I simply wasn't seeing them. Perhaps I was overlooking them or looking past them. Have I lost you? If you'll indulge me for just a minute, I can explain. Every year since we moved back to Washington in 2015, I fly back to northeast Ohio to see my folks, now 84 and 85 and in fine...
I recently interviewed Walker Wernimont for our 30th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. I met up with Walker in Skamokawa early in the morning for our conversation. A volunteer Skamokawa firefighter, Walker had responded to an incident last night. During his work, 12 wasps decided to visit and leave a bit of themselves with him, resulting in little sleep during the night. Walker is originally from Iowa and has lived in Wahkiakum county...

The event is free to the public, with refreshments for sale to benefit The Clatskanie Arts Commission. It was a beautiful day for a concert. Many locals, with chairs in tow, were treated to a delightful array of classic music, from Big Band to Jazz and Blues. The North Coast Big Band is an ensemble...
In collaboration with each other, AVA (Astoria Visual Arts) and The Writers Guild are calling for visual and literary art in response to the theme “Resist!” In a time marked by upheaval, defiance, and transformation, we look to creative voices to explore what it means to resist. Resistance can be personal or political, loud or quiet, collective or solitary. It may take the form of protest, survival, reclamation, or imagination. How do we push back against systems that seek to silence, erase, or control? What does resistance look like in you...
During last week's session of Clatskanie Town Council, City Manager Greg Hinkelman made a presentation regarding a Wastewater Treatment Plant Funding Plan to Council. This was to set up Resolution 2025-16, or a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan for a new sewer plant. Using a 16-slide Powerpoint presentation, Hinkelman gave the current plant's history, including its inception in 1977. Though the plant was "state of the art" at the time, increased environmental regulations, according to Hinkelman, "have made the plant obsolete." The city manager al...
In the summer of 2017, current Wahkiakum County Eagle Editor Kirk McKnight was living in Las Vegas and waiting with bated breath for the hockey season to begin. A month earlier, McKnight witnessed the players who would comprise the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights get drafted one by one. However, McKnight's book, "The Voices of Hockey: Broadcasters Reflect on the Fastest Game on Earth," had already been on bookstore shelves for over a year. "As happy as I was to have another book deal with a publisher...
