Gardening projects you could do Protect your tomatoes from tomato late blight with copper fungicides (considered "organic"). Watch forecasts for a rainy weather pattern developing. One of the things I enjoy most about writing my column each week is getting to know incredible people. This past week, I sat down with a few members of the Zimmerman family to learn about their journey to the farmer's market. Bekalyn, the mom, shared, "We read in The Eagle that there was going to be a farmers market the following Friday, and vendors were invited to participate. It was the perfect fit for us. It's low-key; you can move around as much or as little as you want. You can bring what...
As Clatskanie area residents head off to trade schools, community colleges, and universities this fall, many of them will be assisted in meeting their expenses with Clatskanie Foundation scholarships. Since 1998, the Foundation has awarded over $600,000 in scholarships to local students. The scholarship funds have been established through generous donations...
Lawyers are demanding the release of a longtime Oregon resident arrested by Border Patrol while fighting a Washington state wildfire, saying Friday that the firefighter was already on track for legal status after helping federal investigators solve a crime against his family. His arrest was illegal, the lawyers said, and violated Department of Homeland Security polices that say immigration enforcement must not be conducted at locations where emergency responses are happening. He is one of two firefighters arrested this week while working the...

The turn to autumn-like weather brings anticipation of razor clam digging, among the coast’s most eagerly awaited recreation options. This year, digging will most likely begin with a set of minus tides in early October. Shellfish experts with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife have finished their annual stock assessment, Bryce Blumenthal with Region 6 Coastal Shellfish said last week. This careful process, in which all the clams of every size are pumped out of locations up and down the beach, found there currently are “average pop...

One morning while walking around on his farm, Rosburg's Gary Burkhalder noticed a newborn calf lying on the ground. Assuming the calf was dead, Gary was surprised to see the creature lift its head up. The calf, which would eventually be named Penelope, was born six and a half weeks early. Though Gary didn't think Penelope would survive, his wife, Susan felt there was "something about her." Susan then went over to her friend, Diane Dyer's house to borrow a bottle for Penelope. "They didn't know...

In case you haven't rolled through yet, there's a bright little coffee stand tucked in the Chevron parking lot in Cathlamet, and it's serving up a lot more than just espresso. Little Woo's Brews is a double-sided drive-thru run by longtime local barista Courtney Carlson - better known to most as "Little Woo." If the name sounds personal, that's because it is. "The name 'Little Woo' was my childhood nickname from my parents and growing up it just stuck," Courtney said. "Everyone who knows me from...
Lajuana Winger brought a request to construct a road on an undeveloped county-owned parcel off Clover Street between two properties. This road would provide access to Winger’s and her neighbor’s property and would be entirely paid for by them, costing the county no money. Public Works Director Chuck Beyer explained that if the county were to vacate that parcel of property, Winger would not have to build to county road standards, which would be significantly more expensive. Beyer noted that vacating would also be the easiest process for eve...

I recently interviewed Ron Wright for our 28th installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. I met up with Ron at the 117th Wahkiakum County Fair, where we sat in the shade of the Friends of Julia Butler Hansen pop-up tent. As we began, there were five "well-worn" paperback books, which Ron had brought, laid out on the table before us. The titles were "Atlantis," "Empire of the East," "Adiamante," "The Dragon Never Sleeps," and "Future Shock."...
The Pioneer Community Association’s (PCA) mission is to preserve and maintain the historic Pioneer Center for community use as a performing arts center and a public meeting venue. Over the last 18 months, the center has seen performers Mel & Leah and Friends 20 times and Skamokawa Swamp Opera three times. The center was also host to the Summer Theater Camp, the Bald Eagle Days Variety Show, the traditional Christmas community sing-along “Fa La La,” and American folk duo Phoenix. As a public meeting venue, the center served as a meeting space...

For years, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church has hosted the annual Veterans Dinner. However, last year's event was cancelled due to lack of funds. Thanks to generous donors who have made this possible, the Veterans Dinner will return this year and will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 at 5:30 p.m. "This year, we are partnering with local churches and organizations to put together this tribute evening for our veterans and their families," said Coordinator Susan Gentry. According to Gentry, retired Sheriff...
PLENTY HOT. If you made it to the fair last week, you will have to agree with me that it was a tad warm, as we had temperatures up to 100 degrees at my house and the fairgrounds, too. We were definitely feeling the heat while we were there. We hate to complain, though, as sometimes it’s been pouring down rain and that’s not so great either. I was happy to see some big fans get brought in as the poor animals that are usually enjoying some wide-open spaces were confined to tighter quarters than they are used to, so I’m sure they were happy to ge...
On Friday, Aug. 22 at around 9 a.m., the Cathlamet Public Library staff was setting up its booth for the second day of the Wahkiakum County Fair. Even that early in the morning, the temperature was already beginning to get hot. Librarian Vicki Franklin said, "We need to open the library today and tomorrow as a cooling shelter for people to get out of the heat." The staff then discussed further who would be available to remain at the library for this emergency cooling shelter. Wahkiakum County...
It's coming, good people. Yes, I know it's warm. Hot, even, with Portland hitting the century mark this past weekend. You know what, though? We're not in Portland. True, I had a young man tell me that further up the Elochoman Valley, the thermometer nudged 93 degrees. That's warm enough, I reckon. The point is fall is coming. I'm not trying to speed-read the calendar, but there's no getting around the fact that August is almost over and September's seasons (dove, archery, deer and elk, muzzleloa...
As I've interviewed and gotten to know vendors from the West Wahkiakum Farmers Market, one theme has stood out to me: dedication. Our community is comprised of dedicated and hardworking individuals who consistently bring high-quality products to sell each week. One such person is Carillon Nicol, the co-organizer of the farmers market. Her dedication is remarkable as she harvests and sells produce for her neighbor, Jan. Every Friday during the market season, she and her husband, John, spend the...
