  • Coming Events--Community Center in Cathlamet

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Nov 21, 2019

Driving home after a lovely day at Johnson Park last week, I became flooded with memories of past holidays; who was there, who made dinner, who has since passed on and the new additions of people to call family. I couldn’t help but think of my grandma, she was exceptional at making any holiday special, but Thanksgiving was her favorite. This cable of thoughts and emotions combined with the golden-gloom of SR-4 and the holidays approaching-prompted me to focus on Gratitude. Disclaimer: Men, please do not lose your hat, as your time of a...

Perspective is an important aspect to life, and it can be the tool to smooth over uncomfortable lumps of misunderstanding. To some, the holidays are an exciting time filled with food, family functions and abundant joy. To others, it can be painful, lonely and even depressing. With this divide, in my humble observation, I think it’s imperative to have compassion and understand both sides of the coin. In short, if you know somebody who may be feeling pain, loneliness or despair -- perhaps you have room at your table. If you are alone and in p...

  • Lasagna dinner at fairgrounds Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 14, 2019

BACK TO DRIPPY--This past weekend saw some damp times and some dry times, but it was mostly damp on Saturday. Thankfully it was much drier on Sunday but there were still plenty of clouds about and some areas did get a few more showers and some had more fog, so it really depended on where you were. Looks like the upcoming weekend may be on the damp side, but I'll take that over ice and snow any day! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from November 14-20 are Rory Heywood, Tanner Collupy, Zachary Stewart, Layton Elliott, Roberta Trotter,...

A Historical Synopsis of Thanksgiving Everyone looks at Thanksgiving from a different perspective. To me it comes down to what are we really thankful for. For others it takes on a reverent religious meaning. Today Thanksgiving is our national holiday and occurs this year on Thursday, Nov. 28. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is recognized by most as the first Thanksgiving. For over two centuries, Thanksgiving was celebrated by individual...

As I was growing up, my Dad used to tell me ‘your health is an investment that you give to your future self.’ It took me a while to understand what he meant, but I get it now. This day and age, the word ‘health’ encompasses a broad spectrum of facets in our lives- from potential improvements to complete life changing events, our health is always on the table. Even though most of us know that our best health directly affects our output, it can seem impossible to attain at times. Mental health, physical health and emotional health must often t...

NOT TOO SHABBY--We have had some stunning sunsets around our area and I sure appreciate those who take pictures and post them on Facebook for all to see; they're gorgeous! We were down to 24 degrees out here a couple of days, but the sunshine that followed was awesome and by Saturday, it was even a bit warmer. Sunday had us "lost in a fog" in the morning, with the gray, damp morning being above freezing, but certainly not as pretty. Looks like more dry weather is expected for most of this week, with the raindrops possible towards the latter par...

Halloween in the Westend The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in) is the origin of Halloween nearly 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. They celebrated their new year on November 1. This was the day that marked the end of summer and harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. Volunteers in a Little Piece of Heaven It is really hard to put into writing or words to describe how living in this county with so many wonderful people has brought so many changes to this community as well as to my life. I include those that I have met from Pacific County as well. Although I came from a small community in the Pacific Northwest, I spent a good part of my life living in large cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and Tulsa. Every large city comes with its assets and liabilities,...
