The Commissioners approved the closure of Covered Bridge Road on Saturday, Oct. 4, for the annual Wahkiakum Columbia River Country Days event. Public Works Director Chuck Beyer requested the termination of the Skamokawa rock pit permit due to fee increases. The rock pit has not been active for several years, and the county is not currently using it. Beyer also requested approval to purchase a tilt trailer to replace two damaged trailers. The commissioners approved the purchase of Trailer King for a total of $52,344 to come out of the ER&R...
Last Saturday, Cathlamet's historic Julia Butler Hansen Home hosted its first open house with a fundraising ice-cream and pie social. The event was put on by the Friends of Julia Butler Hansen (FJBH), a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation "dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Julia Butler Hansen house and all its historic contents and garden." Another function of FJBH, according to President Frank Corbin, is "to share the legacy of this incredible family," especially Julia Butler...
I recently interviewed Kathleen McDonald out at Little Island Creamery for our 31st installment of Reader's Fave, a casual interview with someone who shares their favorite book. Kathleen and her brother, Dick, own and operate the local farm and creamery business on Puget Island. When asked if she'd always been a reader, Kathleen said, "Absolutely. I learned to read very early. I was an eclectic reader. My Grandmother was a voracious reader and passed it on to us, the grandchildren." Kathleen...
This week marks the first time The Eagle will be printed by the presses at The Columbian in Vancouver, WA. Publishing a newspaper is increasingly challenging—printing presses are complex and expensive, and require a large staff to keep them fed and happy. The desire to consolidate printing and reduce cost is understandable. But each closure comes with a cost. I feel for the employees who will lose their jobs. We’ve partnered with The Astorian to print since 2019. They’ve been great partners, but as their ownership has changed, so has their...
Today is Thursday, Sept. 18, the 261st day of 2025. There are 104 days left in the year. Today in history: On Sept. 18, 2020, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a towering champion of women’s rights who became the court’s second female justice, died at her home in Washington at age 87, of complications from pancreatic cancer. Also on this date: In 1793, President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol. In 1850, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which created a force of federal commissioners charged with ret...
One of Washington’s largest remaining newspaper presses is closing this month, just three years after it opened. Sound Publishing is closing its production center in Lakewood, Pierce County, which prints more than 30 local newspapers across Washington and several in Alaska that are delivered by mail. The secretive company declined to confirm the closure but employees were informed of it over the last week. Some were told that the facility was losing $1 million a year. Sound’s regional publisher, John Carr, declined to answer my questions, suc...
To The Eagle, Kudos to the Cathlamet Public Library! We are grateful recipients of free library cards, a service extended to all Wahkiakum County residents. And we recently took advantage of the free passes offered by the Library to both Washington State Parks and Columbia River Maritime Museum. These passes can each be checked out for a week. The passes saved us a total of $50: $20 for the daily entrance fees at the two State Parks we visited and $30 for two senior admissions to the Museum. Thank you to the Cathlamet Public Library, Librarian...

GLOOMY START. As this week begins, it’s pretty gloomy and a bit damp this Sunday morning, but by the time you read this, it’s supposed to be nicer and drier, and will give all of us who still have outdoor work to do, another chance to get some things done. I swear this summer went by so fast that I can’t believe we’re in the latter half of yet another month and the holidays are fast approaching...yikes! So, if you’re one of those folks who still needs to wash your outside windows or clean out those gutters, or get that extra stock of wood alre...

When Wallie Garvey invited me to his home for an interview, I was glad he had warned me to bring a four-wheel drive vehicle. His house sits far from the main road and getting there is not for the faint of heart. Several miles down Altoona-Pillar Rock Road on a sunny afternoon I reached the steep, rocky climb that snakes up through the trees toward his property. I'm no stranger to tricky roads, so I shifted our Dodge Ram into four-wheel drive and forged ahead. It's not a road I'd want to tackle...
Well, I'm back from northeast Ohio, and I must say it was a wonderful trip. The weather was perfect. The leaves were just beginning to turn. My folks are doing fine for folks who are 84 and 85. A glitch here and there - Mom's Parkinson's and Dad's COPD - but they're muddling through and doing well. I had a chance to share a meal with some high school buddies (class of 1982), met some new Newton Falls residents, played with a couple dozen dogs, generally sat for a spell, and relived the late 70s...
Plant garlic soon Plant garlic by Oct. 15 to avoid planting in very wet soil from fall rains. Unless your soil is very well drained, make a small, raised bed. Add some lime (three pounds for a 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed) and some organic or conventional “complete” fertilizer. Plant garlic cloves with the bottom of the clove about four inches deep into the bed. Rows can be spaced about 12 inches apart and the cloves about three to four inches apart in the row. The larger the clove you plant, the larger the bulb you will get next summer. Mulch t...

I recently reached my five-year mark as City Administrator here in Rainier. This milestone has given me the chance to reflect on everything that the City has accomplished in that time and a renewed sense of optimism about its overall direction moving forward. Not too long after I started this position, three long-time councilors moved out of the City around the same time. The councilors who replaced them were a combination of some who had previously served and others who added new experiences and perspectives to the body. Citizen participation...

The Clatskanie Tigers varsity football team used a strong ground game offensively to defeat visiting Stanfield 50-12 last Friday. Jumping out to a 21-0 lead partway through the second quarter, the Tigers were aided by two short touchdown runs by senior Lucas Andreasen and another by junior Michael Simpson. After a touchdown throw by Stanfield High School quarterback Jacob Crawford brought the score to 21-6, the Tigers responded in kind with four straight of their own. Sophomore quarterback Will...
Columbia County Cultural Coalition (CCCC) has received a $20,000 grant through the Rebuilding and Expansion Grant Program of the Oregon Community Foundation. These funds will be added to the annual allocation from the Oregon Cultural Trust of $15,262. Traditionally, CCCC has offered matching grants of up to $2,000 to art, culture and history projects within Columbia County. The OCF funds will allow the offer of a few larger grants to more fully fund projects. Application requirements will be announced in Oct. 2025 for the 2026 grant...
In order to form a team this fall, Clatskanie, Rainier, and Knappa High Schools girls soccer have merged to create the “RCK” team. The girls had their first match last Thursday, Sept. 11 in a non-league game against Portland’s Catlin Gabel on the Rainier High School field. “The teams were very evenly matched in terms of speed, conditioning, and passion for the competition,” said Head Coach Eric Smythe. “RCK had 13 shots on goal and scored one late in the second half. Catlin Gabel had 14 shots on goal for a score of 9. This is the first year...
In just seven games to start the season, the Clatskanie girls volleyball team has already earned its second three-game winning streak following a win at home last Thursday against Nestucca. The match went the Tigers' way following a three-set sweep (25-10, 26-17, 25-17) at the hands of the Bobcats (3-6). Senior Joey Sizemore led the girls in kills with 14 and stuff blocks with two. Junior Olivia George had six kills and no errors on 20 attempts to add to the one-sided victory. George also had a...
