    Karen Bertroch|Jun 30, 2022

On June 21, the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board of Directors met with discussions ranging from the official agenda to issues and questions raised from the public. The first portion of the meeting followed the usual openings with one exception. Students from the robotics team were honored for their good work preparing for their trip to both Washington DC and the University of Maryland. Students spoke of the long days spent walking up to 10 miles to see as much as possible, especially in our nation’s capital. It was mentioned that part o...

Dear Readers: We live in a busy place this summer with a solstice that changed our weather almost at midnight when we suddenly went from a wet, cool day to a blazing hot sun that lasted several days, or so it seems. The intense heat had lots of folks outside playing in the Gray's River under the Covered Bridge. Ben dog and I went to Ahlberg Park to see if any folks were there. Silly me! Young families with kids of all ages. Even a baby was on the shore in a baby crib with a blanket over the top...

Summer has arrived and hopefully, the gift of warmth and sun. I have always liked Father's Day because it means summer is arriving. These days I am grateful for my community of friends and people who smile when they see me. Thank you for being my family of friends and readers. One thing that brings me joy is through this column. Being able to share news of what's happening and doing what I can to help when I know there is a need, makes me feel I belong. Photo of the Week: The Finnish American...

  • NHS seniors show their fine character

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 16, 2022

Graduations are always fun and poignant. The 2022 graduating class was especially impressive. In his closing remarks, Principal Justin Laine described what he was most proud of in this class. "They are extremely caring and compassionate, and I want to thank them for that." He also emphasized their "academic excellence, athletic accomplishments, and various talents but I want to emphasize that what I am most proud of and what sets them apart" he said, "is their kindness, inclusion, citizenship, a...

Exciting Summer News: I learned at the Chamber of Commerce office last week that our two award winning robotics teams from both high schools, Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River, will be the Grand Marshals for the Bald Eagle Days Parade in Cathlamet this summer. Isn't that just the best idea ever? I was told the teams are thinking of floats, too. I am excited for this. Not so happy is the news that the Rosburg Store is now permanently closed. Can't say more yet. Photo of the Week: We are all so...

All over our west county area, the high grass is winning. Some farmers have started their first cut of the summer, but then the rain keeps coming and messes with the whole process. But on the other hand, Hank Nelson's calves are growing so fast we can see it driving by on the highway. Tyson Vogeler has goslings "on steroids" following him around all day. He may think they love him, but I suspect he's more of a mother figure meaning he's where the food comes from and they know it. Joanie...

  • NHS Valedictorian Grace Hunt

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 2, 2022

Grace Hunt, daughter of Amy and Ed Hunt and granddaughter of Hank and Linda Nelson, has worked as hard as could possibly be expected in her last year in high school. With not only her senior year to complete, she has spent the last two years in high school also completing an AA degree from Grays Harbor College in the Running Start program. With completion of two years of college work as well as her senior year's work, she will graduate with her high school diploma and her AA degree together at g...

  • WHS Salutatorian Josh Chadwick

    Karen Bertroch|Jun 2, 2022

While Josh Chadwick's GPA is the second highest in the senior class, there is only a tiny speck between the first and second GPA's. His downfall, he admits easily, was calculus. Josh has a very active mind that wants foremost to learn about things that interest him, like computers. When around six years old, he learned computer technology. Then he took lessons in coding and building games on-line. He has always loved computers, so for him to study computers and robotics in college is a perfect...

I woke up today to sun. May I simply say I feel joy again? And gratitude to the Lord of all. Photo of the Week: My friends, I have goofed with names again and can only apologize to those who feel unseen because of my memory lapses. A couple columns ago, I mistakenly called Jane Scharbach "June." I am so sorry, Jane. I had a call from one of Jane Scharbach's friends in Oregon who said she had watched for an apology from me last week for giving Jane Scharbach the wrong name. She thought surely...

June is just around the corner which means graduation, Memorial Day traffic, vacations, classic cars at the fairgrounds, July 4 holiday, fireworks, and the Finnish American Folk Festival on the last weekend in July. Summer goes by too quickly. Then kids are off to college and we're exhausted trying to keep up with life. Oh wait, it's dry by end of summer so I just water plants at that point. And then it's fall. But as a cancer survivor, I will not fret or complain. I will be grateful for every...

  • Naselle/GRV School Board approves contracts, accepts resignation

    Karen Bertroch|May 26, 2022

On May 17 the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board held their monthly meeting. All board members were present, except Amy Chadwick. Five community members were present for the meeting. The meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and consent agenda. Personnel was next on the agenda with: 1) approval of summer school contracts for Moten, Baker, Flood, Rudolph, King and Teubner; 2) approval to hire Marie Green as head girls’ basketball coach; 3) acknowledge resignation from Jessica Mason, Naselle Youth Camp paraeducator. D...

Photo of the Week: Jack and June Scharback of Sisson Creek on Oneida Road. Life is taking on momentum now that we're heading toward June. Everything in my yard is "Coming up Roses" from "Gypsy" the musical, except my roses. I think the tips have frozen one too many times. But to say I had a great day today gives few hints of today's happy adventure driving out to "the end of the road" called Oneida. I sat for two hours with Jack and June Scharbach whose house is reached by walking across a...

Carlton Appelo’s 100th birthday is today: When we talk about Carlton, there is no question he made his mark on Wahkiakum County in so many ways. His father was the founder of Wahkiakum West Telephone Company. Carlton took it over after his early years in World War II and his education at University of Washington and his master’s from the University of Sweden. When he came home, he took over the telephone company and built it up for many years. His nephew, Steve Appelo, is now Board President there. Carlton grew up in Deep River along with his...

May and Mothers: We made it to May so hopefully a full blown spring is just down the line. Spring is so much better when the full sun is present for days at a time. But alas, it doesn't seem to be so. May is a tough time for me. Those of us who have the right to expect a phone call for Mother's Day, must accept the silence and let it go every year. She is always busy and there are no calls. My daughter's birthday is the same day as Carlton Appelo's, May 12. So this year I am focusing on Carlton...

Stories bring us together: I talked with Gail Wirkkala this morning. She called from Longview to give me information on the Rosie Nelson Johnson story that was in the April 21 issue. Rosie talked about the Shamrock Hotel in Deep River. Gail told me that the original story came from Marlene Wirkkala Wiitala. Gail worked in the Shamrock Hotel as a young girl, so she has her own stories and some of the things left from the hotel, too. She invited me to come and talk with her at her home in...

The April 19 meeting of the Naselle/GRV School Board of Directors opened at 6:30 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance. School Superintendent Lisa Nelson and all directors were present. There were three present from the community and one reporter. In the portion of the agenda that addressed staff and teachers who have submitted their resignation as of August, 2022, the following were approved: Herlet Padilla, Jessica Frame, Diane Bennett, Marina Smith, and Nathan Bruce. Photo of the Week: The family of Marjorie Elder Kraxberger gathered with her for a family photo in 2006 at a Covered Bridge Celebration. For Finns, family is probably the most important value. As an illustration of that, Marjorie's photo shows how important she was to her family. Appelo Archives Treasures: At the Archives in Naselle, there are so many things to enjoy. I worked there for many years helping Carlton Appelo establish the center. I went through many of Carlton's collections in those...

Photo of the Week: It's hard to get grass cut when it rains and sleets and snows in April. I'm hoping, dear readers, that you won't judge me as irresponsible if my yard appears to be more field than yard. Not only was there snow, as seen in the photo looking north off Covered Bridge Road, but a tree in my front yard also came down last week. It just leaned over in the wind and landed in the yard without touching the house or decks. I'm so grateful for that. I tried for a couple days to find...

Weather: Big hail, wind, rain and cold so far, so I'm hoping weather improves later in the week when you get your Eagle. I often try to get a sense of who subscribes to The Eagle but still I'm not sure. If you think you can just read it on-line, you still will miss a lot. So think about supporting one local business, The Eagle, would you? Naselle Camp: The Governor did not change anything in the supplemental budget, so it appears the camp will close. Boys will be gone by December 31 and...

Photo of the Week: Theodore Willard Swanson May 30, 1929 - March 21, 2022. He was the youngest of eight children and the only boy. As a child he was called Teddy. His sister Lillian Swanson Whitten (born 1909), the oldest child in the family, said in an interview in the book, "Water Over the Bridge" by Ruth Busse Allingham that "their family was always musical and they loved to sing and dance. Dances down in Rosburg were at the Grange Hall there -Rosburg Hall. The Grange disbanded and some of...

Just got word that Ted Swanson died March 21 at home. We offer our prayers and tears. Announcement: A community meeting has been scheduled for this evening, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Naselle Community Center with Rep. Jim Walsh in attendance to discuss the possible closure of the Naselle Youth Camp. Governor Inslee has also been invited. The Community Center is on Parpala Road just past the library in Naselle in the former Congregational Church. Karl Marlantes: Last Saturday, Karl Marlantes,...

Thursday update: The Eagle received word late Wednesday after the print edition had gone to press and the online version of this article had been posted that the Supersale at Johnson Park set for this Saturday has been postponed to April 23. Naselle Youth Camp: Thanks to State Representative Jim Walsh who kept the Naselle Youth Camp open at the beginning of the legislative process. Unfortunately, the camp was pulled out later on. There is still a chance for it to remain open while it sits on...

Free days at Washington State Parks: The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission invites visitors to enjoy a state park on Wednesday, March 9 in honor of Billy Frank Jr.'s birthday, on Saturday, March 19 in recognition of Washington State Parks' birthday and on Friday, April 22 in celebration of Earth Day. Visitors are not required to display the Discover Pass for day-use visits to a Washington state park or on lands managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or Was...

  • Performers bring classical music moment to Naselle

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 10, 2022

One might think that because we live in a rural, out of the way community that most visitors just drive through, we have to leave the area to enjoy extraordinary musical talent. A recent concert cleared up any misunderstandings by proving that is not the case for those of us living here. One of those moments when an audience could be transported to "another place" is in the music played with magic and skill last Saturday. "Transported" was the universal response to the team of two women, Kim...
